Other than chosing a Monitor is There Any Reason to Have a Desktop over Laptop?

About 6 months ago I bought a new laptop and kept the old laptop and "converted it" into a "desktop" in my den by connecting it to my old 20" monitor, adding a wireless keyboard and putting the laptop out of sight in the large open storage area in my computer desk (level below where my Monitor is).

Out of curiosity, other than not being forced to have a built in monitor, is there any reason whatsoever to buy a desktop instead of a laptop for home computing?

I always assumed that desktops could hold bigger hard drives than most laptops could. And some laptops don't come with a disk drive. (Most of them do, but I know a couple of people who didn't have one.)

With a desktop, you can often get more bang for your buck. The top of the line parts are overall more affordable than buying a top of the line laptop. The option of customization, tweaking, and upgrading is a very big reason why people choose desktops. Also, maybe they don't have a need for mobile computing.

There are countless reasons why people choose one over the other. I guess it comes down to an individual level, what are you going to use the computer for, and after you have figured that out, a buyer can make a decision from there.

Laptops are useful only because of their portability, Desktop are preferred if portability is not required as they are more powerful (and cheaper in price) than any other laptops. The probability of Desktop failure is less than laptops, all because of their big size and good cooling.

I suggest you keep your laptop open and not hidden inside as it will generate lot of heat and won't provide air flow.

Thanks for the Good Advice I May Reevaluate Things

Thanks for the good advice especially on the fanning thing. Oddly enough my new laptop an Acer Aspire 5740 has no fan problem and makes no noise but the old one a Toshiba Tecra is horrible in response to fan noise. I'll probably now turn it off rather than leaving it on and may consider buying a desktop for my den and just sell the Tecra for parts.
