i was reinstalling windows xp, the computer took 8hrs to load the whole thing as well as being extremely slow to load the desktop. i guessed it was loading at the rate of 50min per min of indecated time. does anyone know the reason why this is.

Could be a ton of things..

Condition of the install cd.
Possible optical drive failure.
Possible ram failure.
Possible hard drive failure.

Now that XP is installed, how is the system running? We can somewhat eliminate the above possible's by knowing performance now.

Some specs would help, does it make any odd sounds (beeping, fans working extra hard), anything out of the norm?

This would point to a bad hard drive most likely. You should run a disk diagnostic on it buy running the hard drive makers disk diagnostic utility.

I agree, the ahrd drive is the most likely culprit. Second would be the optical drive or cd itself.

system amd7750, 130gb hdd, 2gb ram. at first i thought it was the cdrom so i put in a good one, the hdd is a new one it has worked fine before, there is plenty of ram, are we not talking motherboard failure then. i did a diagnostic on the system, rebuilt cfg, mbr and all that, because maybe something got corrupted, i thought of the install disc, so i used anothet disc i had but the same result. so i need direction as to where to look next.

thanks

It doesn't matter if the hard drive is new or not. You may have to download the hard drive makers disk diagnostic utility and run it. What brand and model is the hard drive.

Have you ever changed out the ribbon or cables from Cd/Hd that runs to MB. Sometimes they can go bad too.

the hdd is a samsung sp1604n

You can download the iso for a cdrom and then use burning software like nero or roxio or other programs that can take an image and burn it to cd. You just can't burn the file to a cd like you do with normal data you have to choose the option to write image to cd.

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/downloads/Hutil210_iso_for_CDROM_drive.zip

Or if you have a floppy drive.

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/downloads/Hutil210_FDD.zip

Unzip it and copy the files to a floppy and boot to the floppy and run the tests. Go to tool and then run self diagnostic and it will run 2 test and then ask you to run a surface scan test, run it.

This page shows you screen shots of the test.
