adding heatsink to cpu

Hi all! I'm working on fixing up a not-so-old computer. In transit, or something, the processor on my computer got damaged - the needles were bent, some of them, and I had to straighten them out. Anyways, so, now it is on the motherboard, but I need to remove the old thermal compound and add the new stuff that I got. I'm just wondering what kind of common household products I could use to clean the old stuff off? Thanks!

Use lint-free cloth or something to that effect, many people use q-tips as well. Use high concentration rubbing alcohol or acetone to help dissolve the paste, make sure you get as much as possible and you should be good. Try to only touch the top of the CPU and avoid contact with any other parts, especially the pins, sounds like they've had a rough enough time as is haha.

what happens if you dunk it in soapy water ? is it waterproof ??

Oh yeah totally. I spray my whole set up down with a hose from time to time. Its no good for getting rid of that sticky thermal paste, but does a good job eliminating dust! :p

(Don't do this. Computers are expensive. I have to say it, you never know...)

Well thanks all for the help! As tempting as it is, I don't think I'll be trying the soapy water.... :p. I might check to see if my LCD cleaner is made of alcohol or acetone, perhaps that might work as well.
Wish me luck!
