Hey all!

its been ages since I last logged in here! I missed this place...

Well anyway, I have a computer. The spec is hopefully in my sig but I cant remember, although the GFX is now hd 4560.

I would like to upgrade to something like this:

Motherboard:
GIGABYTE X58A-UD3R
CPU:
INTEL Core i7-950
GFX:
ZOTAC GeForce GTX470 1.28MB DDR5 AMP! Edition
RAM:
ZEPPELIN 4GB KIT DDR3 1333MHz GOLD

Will this work together? or is there any better options?

Thanks!

You'll want a better power supply for that, I think, unless you've got one of the Delta-built ones. I'm looking that up right now.

I was thinking that too, I used the eXtreme PSU calculator to see how much energy it'd consume and it came up to minimum 428W or something and recommended around 488W... should the 500W be enough then?

Looked it up, yours is a Sirfa unit...I'd upgrade that first before sticking a 470 in there.

As far as the parts you're wanting to upgrade to, the CPU and mobo are both solid choices...no worries there. You may want to consider a Radeon HD6870 or EVGA's factory OC'd GTX 460 rather than a GTX 470, though. Either choice would run a lot cooler and have similar performance to a reference 470.

EVGA FTW 460- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130581

However, if you do decide to go with a 470, this one is a beast:

Alright, im back, so I searched up some more and found a good deal on a ATi hd 6870.

Everything was fine for the last 3 weeks, until just now I noticed that the temps are EXTREMELY hot... on idle the cpu temps show around 80-90C!! Im not sure what to make of this? its stock speeds and stock cooling.. now ive turn a fan on and pointed it at the motherboard/cpu. the Temps for the cpu are now 65C... and another temp (not core) which was around 30 is now 2C? hahah not sure what to make of this... ..maybe a refrigirator. haha lame joke

Any thoughts? the paste should be applied fine.. it was preapplied to the CPU before hand, not much where I could go wrong there...

Please aid?

thanks

I searched the whole internet and did not find anyone with temperatures as high as mine on their i7...

I just ran GTA IV and the avg temp was 94C, with core 4 being extremely naughty at temperatures reaching 100C.

Do the high temperatures shorten the life of my CPU? will I have any luck asking for another one?

Thanks!

Yeah, that's way too high. If you just used the stock stuff preapplied to the heat sink, then you won't get absolutely spectacular temps, but with no overclock it shouldn't be anywhere near that...60c at most under load.

What's the voltage set at in the BIOS? Do other monitoring programs give the same reading?

1.182 or something... so thats correct.

heck, I dont know.. is this a valid reason to get it checked or replaced under warranty?

Maybe, if there is indeed a hardware problem. If there is, I'm not sure how to tell if it's in the mobo or the CPU.

Did you try another monitoring program?

Sure, I tried SpeedFan, CPUID (cpuz) and Real Temp.

All give pretty much the same results, so does the BIOS.

Well I guess it could be flaw of the MB. the heatsink is not hot at all.. its pretty much room temperature when I touch it on the side. the Northbridge (i think thats what it is) gets pretty hot tho?

Well thats that, the CPU fan got unhinged from the clip ons? im not sure why but they are not staying in! am I doing it wrong? i just seems to pop out when ever... even though I lock it!

also, that one temp is now showing -128C....

seriously?
