You should have a look at the newer hd 68xx range of gfx. Then you could do with a smaller PSU too, be more environment friendly :)

What OS are you gonna run on it?

Also your HDD is not really good as a primary system drive... its more made for storage of data... so its reliable and quite but not the fastest :)

personally I have that exact drive (came from a NAS that I had), but I still install windows on a smaller HDD and use the WD as an safe extra storage.

From a quick overview the build looks good. I'd probably say get a 6XXX card, seeing as you won't be buying for 2~ months. A 650W PSU would work great with room to spare. As for the hard drive, while Burgun is right that it isn't the fast drive out there, I doubt you will be getting that either way, and the drive you picked will work great as a primary drive. I am assuming you are going to be running Windows 7?

Also something I noticed, or maybe never noticed before, the drive is listed as 'bare'. I don't know if this means that it won't have the NTFS formatting or not, which could lead to a problem. I'm sure one of the other members here will tell you whether to worry about it or not.

Good luck on the build.

yea the new 6XXX cards I havent taken a look at since I am happy with my 5850.

I just led him into the direction of my card for now since it is a good card.

As for the HDD, I read the packaging is a Bare drive. I have no idea what the means either. Possibly that it doesnt come in a box. opened? not sure

also I dont cant find anywhere saying how many RPM that currently has.
I may have him grab another

HDD should be sealed. They don't come with manual and cables.

IMO, if he don't plan to dual video card, core i7 2600 may be another good option

A "bare" drive is the same as an OEM drive, I believe. It will come with just the drive; no documentation or cables or anything like that.

I have some advice on a couple of parts-

HDD:
WD's "Green" drives typically aren't particularly good as primary drives. They're designed primarily as auxiliary storage. This would be both cheaper and faster:

RAM:
X58 systems are capable of tri-channel operation, so it's better to use three DIMM's, not four, which would yield only dual channel. 8GB is way overkill anyway...6GB is the norm on X58 systems like this, and 4GB is normal on everything else. Also, for 8Gb, 2x4GB would have been superior to 4x2GB.

This is a good kit:

Or this, if you want it a bit cheaper:

edit: And you're right, it most likely will change a lot in the next two months.

everyones covered alot.... even going with a 5870 is a decent upgrade over the 5850, and the 5870 also holds its own over the 6850 as well

^ True, but the 6850 has a newer set of features, and scales better in crossfire. 1x 5870 is better than 1x 6850, but 2x 6850 is better than 2x 5870.
