i am very "stuck"

the other day i bought a 17 2600k from microcenter. for some reason ididnt buy a mobo for it. about a day later intel released the sata problem.(lucky me).

i have suggestions to return the sandy bridge, and i have had suggestions to go pick up a defective motherboard.

i am very torn and frustrated over this whole thing. why? becuase this weekend is my birthday weekend and a few months back i made a decision i was going to build a new rig with the new sandybridge my birthday weekend. so here i am with a case, psu , and sandy bridge not knowing the next step to take. + my computer just died about two weeks ago.

this decision is making everything difficult becuase now i dont know if i should get the video card , hardrive etc or just call the birthday off.

any help is..well.....hepful. thanks in advance.

sorry for the rant, but i am TORN NTM pissed :)

You are in a bit of a jam my friend. The SB CPU is not part of the issue/recall/replacement. That said I do think as a matter fairness MC would take a return no restock fee.

You cannot get a Cougar Point chipset MoBo from MC anymore.

Not to start an Intel/AMD thing but. If you picked Intel I would encourage you to wait unless you really feel 1) the AMD options look good to you, 2) More so if you were considering AMD before. People who buy AMD do so for some reasons that I would say are not why others pick Intel. To change because of this 2 month delay could give you 3-5 years of regrets of the should/could/would with your purchase.

I would not keep buying components at this time unless you think you might get a one time deal. Things generally get better and cheaper. I don't know of anything in the pipeline but as a general.

To those of you with the recalled boards or if you can get your hands on currently. Consider this from MSI.
According to Intel, the performance of some of the Intel SATA ports on Intel 6 series products can degrade over a period of 3 years, but no peripheral damage or data loss occurs.
Link.

That is why I do not see a concern for those who have the bad batch. Other than the swap out and looks like 2 week loss in having from the time sent in to replacement that might happen?

Yeah sadly they wont take the CPU back as the CPU is perfectly fine. You will get charged shipping/restock for that. If you have the motherboard though id wait till they bring out the fix THEN have the board returned. This way you don't have to wait for 2-3 months for your board to get back.

well microcenter is about 20-30 mins away, (i did not order it online).
they said i could return it in 30 days if the package has not been opened. i am going to see if they will give me a motherboard, then when the time is right i can return it and say it is defective. if they wont give me a mobo i will simply return the beautiful 2600k : (

love the avatar BTW, just watched that video today!

The bug doesn't affect the sata 6gb/s ports, and many motherboards have an extra two 6gb/s ports on a Marvell controller. As long as you use those instead of the 3gb/s ones, this won't affect you at all. It's not even a definite defect in all boards anyway...some of them aren't affected at all.

Buy a motherboard off of amazon (they are still being sold there), and only use the SATA III ports until you can get a replacement.

If one is not using SSD, why should someone returned the main board if the sata iii ports not affected? one sata port for hard drive and other use DVD/cd. do you really need another port? there is a lot of usb ports. I just don't see the fuss about it. two years later you want a new computer anyway.

Very good points. But it is fair for the buyer to get what they bought.

Very much why I am not some little girl with this thing. Acting all freaked out.;)

Edit: But the fast ports are not affected.

If I bought it and installed it, I won't returned it because the enjoyment of this new toy is well worth it, but If I didn't buy it and can't get it then it is a different story. Is it 100% sure the sata iii port is not affected? I guess the people not sure that is why they are freak out. Well i hope I can buy one when May 2011 come as all my computers are at least 6 years old.

SATA 3.O is not affected. Because of people even here on the boards including a highly respected member, dangerzone or some variation. Wants to completely not follow all common sense. Create his own naming standard. SATA I,II,III. He wants to make SATA II SATA 3.0. What ever, short of comment I have better things to do.
