CoD peaked and killed multiplayer FPS's for me

As far back as Goldeneye64 and Perfect Dark on N64 I've been obsessed with multiplayer in FPS's. Over time they got funner and funner.

Then CoD 4 came along and blew the rest away. I hate to think how many hours I put into that game, but it got to the point where I could log in to any HC server and go 100+:1 99% of the time. Didn't matter what guns and perks I used, I ruled that game. Then WaW came out and it was ok, but the series has gone downhill ever since and it's been killing me watching the series and community just go right down the toilet. Instead of improving on what's great they've increased the few bad qualities of 4 and pandered to the lowest common denominator of the fan base.

It seems like every time I play any of them now it's nothing but people being absolute bitches hiding in the most random area they can find or 12 year olds who want to scream and yell shit they can't get away with in real life and just be annoying. As the video game industry itself steadily declines it's all the more disheartening to have such a recent game bring your hopes up for gaming and then have them dropped so low by it's sequels. For someone who's been gaming since they got their first NES at 5 years old back in 1992, it's getting pretty damn depressing.

I could sit here and rant about the industry as a whole for hours, but I won't. :D

And because I know it's going to come up, yeah, there's Battlefield, but I've never been a big fan of the series. BC 1 and 2 were pretty good, but nothing exceptional. BC3 looks good, and I'll likely get it, but it's still going to have a lot of aspects I don't really like. Things that have bothered me as long as the series has existed.

And this is why you should get into clan gaming ;)

It isn't a massive time sink, it isn't spending multiple hours a day on the game, it is coming on when you want to have some games, and maybe playing some games, depending on who you join, usually for fun rather than being entirely competitive.

I was in the same boat as you, would go into a server and be on a 20-30 kill streak before finally getting taken down, regardless of what gun I used. You looked on the server stats for my (then) clan server, and saw I had more than double the nearest point/minute ratio of anyone on that had ever joined

People are more around the same skill level as you, so it makes it much more challenging and fun, and when you have an objective based game rather than just "point and shoot", it becomes a whole lot more fun

Been there, done that unfortunately.

I have to agree with you Motorcharge, on every aspect of your post. Cod has not only ruined their series, but brought down a bunch of other series with it. Because everyone wants to make games as popular as Cod.

But the worst part I think is how it's ruined gaming for me specifically. I had several thousand hours put into CSS, then got roped into Cod4, invested in a couple thousand hours into that, and then WaW came out. That broke me. I tried going back to Cod, I tried going back to CSS, I've tried new games like Crysis 2. But I just can't.

I can't game multiplayer FPSs anymore.

I think it has a lot to do with Activision meddling in the development cycle and ****ing everything up. In any case, I've also grown tired of FPS's (with the sole exception of TF2) thanks to COD, but despite being jaded I can't help but feel excited at the mere mention of Counterstrike: GO.

CS is the game of my childhood, and I absolutely can't wait for a new installment. Hopefully Valve can merge the prettiness and functionality of Source with the competitive atmosphere of 1.6 and create something beautiful. I am optimistic.

I think Call Of Duty started to go downhill after MW2,

Don't know about you guys,But im not impressed with the pricing of their DLC content either its a ripoff,But they will continue to charge too much for DLC because silly people keep on paying their outrageous prices...i mean £11.49 each DLC pack and there are 3 of them which would cost all together £34.47...thats for a game we already own.

I miss the good old days when Online FPS were actually fun...007 Nightfire Multiplayer had me hooked for ages and ages,I still think people play it online now.

It will be interesting to see how MW3 turns out though,But im betting it will be the same cycle again...same game re-skinned,overpriced DLC etc.

I prefer my time on Battlefield where you have to think ahead,Support your team,Much better than just running around like Rambo.

You can get everything counterstrike in a package for like $8.
I don't like how you guys say that COD4 ruined FPS games. It didn't. It was an amazing game that marked a peak in FPS gaming. Of course companies are going to try to ride off the success of COD, but you can't blame COD4 for that. It's not like it's a bad game now because of the clones.
This part is probably just personal opinion, but I loved MW2. I think that was one aspect that really brought COD4 to fame: They let us do something besides re play World War 2. I loved the idea of modern combat. Yeah, other games have done it, but COD had such a nice system already going, they just needed this new niche. Besides the ending of the single player, I think MW2 was great too. The babies that would play multi player weren't fantastic, but once again that's not the game's fault.
I think the mistake was going back in time like in WaW and BLOPS.

Regardless, I'm rambling. If you actually take the time to look, there will always be players out there better for you. Find them, get back to playing, and don't blame a game for ruining other games for you.

One reason why CoD4 multiplayer got very popular is because EVERYONE can literally rape an entire online session just by camping and abusing the **** out of the killstreak system. Goldeneye 64, Perfect Dark, 1st Halo, all those old fps games actually required skill in the end to win a tournament.

Camping in CoD doesn't work, it is far too easy to clear someone out. You know they are there, spray through the wall, nade em, snipe em, jump round the corner and shoot em, C4 em, there are so many ways to easily get them, and if you can't, you are pretty damn poor at the game.

It so easy everyone can own...yet they don't. If it was that easy, that imbalanced, and that bad, everything would be level, but it isn't. If you find it too easy, that is where clan gaming comes in, and that is why competitive gaming is better.

You are with people of equal skill level, there are no kill streaks (not that they were OP anyway, except for chopper in HC), certain things are controlled or removed, if you game on custom maps, the map advantage goes

I'm not a camper myself but If I actually was, I would pick off a target or 2 then move on to a completely different area. I rarely play CoD and more of a Battlefield / Gears player myself. Memorizing the map your on is very important on any shooter game as well as communication to your fellow teammates.
