MMORPG Players vs MMORPG Players

Something I've noticed lately, or, for some years now is that, some people who play an MMORPG game, let's take WoW as an example, feel "intimidated" by other newer MMORPG games and feel negatively about them. Me, I like to widen My circle and try out this and that, but My friends... No.

As some of you might know, Star Wars: The Old Republic(Coming MMORPG game) is released in 16 days, 11 if you pre-ordered it, already out if you read this after the release(Unrelated information)... Anyways. I am getting it. So is my classmate. None of us are playing WoW, but we both have once in a time. My other classmate, who plays WoW, doesn't think SWTOR looks like fun. Neither does any other of my WoW playing friends.

I think this is because of the simple fact that they play WoW and that. is. it.!
They don't want to play other MMORPG's because they are a "threat" to WoW and they know that the other MMORPG's are probably pretty fun but they don't really "care" about that.

I don't know... Maybe it's just me but if this is the deal.. Grow up! The world is full of games, atleast try them out instead of just thinking "Nah it's no fun"

Tell me guys, have you ever encountered this with your friends?

WoW was the godfather of mmorpgs pretty much, it had everything you could ever want from an mmo, and when it came out it was a revelation. Its aged a lot and is very slowly dying out but there are still the die-hard wow fans who have played it since vanilla and don't want to replace it with anything else. Personally I like WoW and ive found a lot of other mmorpgs feel like worse versions of WoW for whatever reason, ill be interested to see what star wars is like though :)

Actually, what's sad, is that it's not really dying. Yes, as new games come out, they take a very small percent of WoW players with them, but beyond that, right now, is a slow time for them. Once the new expansion comes out, people will flood back, do all the content, play for a while, then wait for more content. I wish Blizzard would put it to rest, but that's impossible with how much money they still make from it.
And honestly, I shudder to think what would happen the day they actually shut down the servers....100's and 100's of hours and even days put into this game...I fear a lot of people will over react. So, to avoid catastrophe, they will have to find a way to ween players off of WoW, that, or always find new content to add....it's rather sad.

It is really sad to see actual addictions from games like WoW. Sure, I can put 100's upon 100's of hours into a game, but there is an end to everything. I put like 1500 hours into FFXI back in the day, did everything one could do, absolutely loved the game. Can't remember why I quit exactly, but they were great gaming memories.

Roughly the same time probably put into Star Wars Galaxies.(SWG) Absolutely miss that game and the crafting/city building/etc. Player bounties? Funnest thing ever.

I plan to purchase SWTOR, from what I have played in the beta it has been decent amount of fun. I am in a guild already of a good 50+ people that I used to play with back in the prime SWG days, so the fun will be had. Can't wait to play with all of them and see what kind of fun we can get into.

It could all be a thing of money as well. I'm not too sure I'd want to be paying for two pay-to-play games (or three if you're playing Rift as well) when I'm still getting full enjoyment from one.

But I also refuse to play PTP games mainly due to the money thing. So I don't really know the mentality.

I know for me, I play WoW. I have considered playing Star Wars and even made a post in the games forum about it. Thing is for me, I don't have the time to invest into 2 different MMORPG's. When I think about leaving WoW, i think about the time I have invested and where I am currently based on the rest of the WoW world. I only will leave Wow for a game that can hold my attention as well or better. If it doesn't, then whats the point?

I spent 3.5 years playing wow as a top progression guild in the United States. Can honestly say I don't regret quitting in even the slightest. I am so much happier without it, I can honestly say it was an addiction for me. Friends would come over and want me to go out with them....I would look at them like they were stupid. "We are working on progression tonight, this isn't some trash run. I can't. Go away." Only game I want to invest that much time into again is Diablo 3, and possibly the Star Wars MMO if the reviews are good enough.

maybe ill invest time in Diablo3. but honestly i dont want to pay just to play a game all the time. so if i do decide to do play diablo, i might as well wait for a Private Server, but a server with near same rates as the official ones, so no hyper leveling etc etc.

i used to be a MASSIVE Conquer Online player, my pc was on 24/7 with either me playing or my Character in a training ground just gaining small chunks of EXP...

but since then ive found a new addicition, Game Development. and now i have an intrest in Hardware but still play a few MMORPGs, but WoW i wont play. its too much money just for a generic mmorpg that has lost the magic it once had

I'm glad you guys are commenting on this. And sure, as "Hyper Kagome" says, it can be a thing of money and also as Exo says, maybe there isn't enough money and to stop playing would be a waste of time.

I tend to agree that it has lost its "Magic". For me, it is more about the friends made within the game as well as how my RL friends and I hang out.

I would be willing to commit to another game, but up to date, nothing seems to offer what WoW does. People are saying that The Star Wars MMO is a carbon copy of WoW.... if that is true, its pointless. Give me a game that I can have fun, hang out with friends and still be challenging enough to hold my attention and Ill switch. ( and hopefully some of my friends will too)
