Internet keeps dropping out - cant retain internet connection

I have a netbook running XP. The netbook has a Broadcom wifi I think. It works great at the library, but when I get home, it doesnt work well. It keeps dropping out every few minutes. Sometimes, it wont start until I restart the netbook.

If I use a wifi stick, it has better connection, but still drops out every 10-15mins.

Can anyone help. If you need more info, just ask.

Sounds like its either a security issue or a router issue since it works fine at the library.

There are many things this could be, and you provided a very broad statement about how the issue can be assessed.

But, I will go over a few things that could be causing the issue. If you install an Anti-Malware software (ie: Kaspersky), it may install what is call a "NDIS Filter." You would notice the NDIS Filter within the connection of your network adapter. That filter inspects network packets going to and from your computer/network. If you have another firewall active (ex: Windows Firewall), then both programs will tend to conflict with one another, and cause the frequent network drops.

Another possibility is the way the router is setup within your home network.

It can be countless things. Try to be more specific if you can.

Works fine at the Library, so the netbook is ok.
Disable wireless connectivity on the netbook at home, and conect via a patch lead directly to your router.
If the problem goes away when hard wired, more than likely you're just on the brink of a stable signal level.
A rather more tech way might be to find out your routers LAN IP (192.168.x.x) and try pinging it from the command prompt when your internet fails. Loads of lost packets would indicate a poor link. 100% loss - no link at all.

I had similar problem and I called for some technician to check and they found short circuit on phone cable interrupting the connection.
