Security updates for Microsoft.NET Framework - repeated failures to install.

Whenever I try to install security updates for Microsoft.NET Framework (on Vista) I usually get a repeated failure to install on one of them, accompanied by failure code 643. These updates arrive in batches of three or four at a time and there always seems to be one that refuses to update successfully. In the past this has happened on the update for NET Framework 4, but on this occasion the update "NET Framework 1.1 SP1" is the problem. In the past, I resolved this each time (successfully install all the updates) by uninstalling ALL versions of the NET Framework and re-installing them fresh, as per Microsoft's recommendation for failure code 643.
This is becoming such a regular occurrence whenever a new batch of NET Framework updates are available, that I am wondering what the reason is and if there is another way of resolving this? Could it be because I have Vista with Service Pack 2 installed and the update causing the problem is designated SP1?

How vital are these updates anyway - as I am now tempted to ignore them!

Thanks!

Net framework really isn't needed except by certain programs. I would go ahead and uninstall all entries and then see if any programs are complaining that its not installed. There aren't many that require it.

You do not need ALL .NET frameworks and ALL their updates.
You should install .NET framework(s) ONLY if a certain program(s) you are using requires it in order to work.

For example:

If you installed the program, but it doesn't work because it needs .NET framework version 2.0 then you will install ONLY .NET framework version 2.0.If after that the program works then you are done.
