This is a book I found on amazon.com and wanted some advice. I was a MIS manager in Silicon Valley for over a decade and had to take care of securing networks but didn't really have to worry about hackers. I have a network at home and would like to know something about security and I'm not talking about anti-virus and firewalls but defend against hackers. I've been retired for 10 years and I don't know anything against someone hacking into my computers but would like to learn. So is this book what I need or do you have a better one to recommend?

lets face it, your not gonna get a dedicated attacker. Its all gonna come from virus/malware/mal-sites. The best way is a decent firewall, virus scanner, sit behind an nat router, and general common sense.

You, sir, are correct.

This is like someone spying on you through the webcam on your laptop

Hackers have bigger fish to fry than just you, Joe Schmo.

In technical terms, you could install anti-virus into your computer and scan for rootkits, those are the ones that can alter your HDD files. The cellphone carrier can track your phone so I'm not too sure about removing the track sensor from the device. Hackers are the secretive persons that create inflicting codes for malicious programs and send them throughout the cyber network. Not any person can track the hacker's footprints that they leave behind when sending those programs into the network. Most of the time, they clean their prints impeccably well and only leave very small detail that almost impossible to detect, well I don't know all the details about this but most likely you leave it to the professionals.

... yeeeeah. You've been watching too many movies.

Yes, there are black hat hackers who can burrow into your system and have their way with you machine with you none-the-wiser. Those guys have no reason to have anything to do with you.

The guys who are looking to capture and exploit your machine are script-kiddies and opportunists using spam, malware and compromised websites to trick people into allowing them into their machines to use them for largely money-making enterprises (bank-fraud, spreading more spam, identity-theft). For the average Joe, a decent anti-virus program and safe internet-surfing habits are all you need.

also getting a good router will have a firewall. and also once you seem pretty good with keeping you Net secure and what not. It would be kinda fun to set up an honeypot, which is a like not securing you network and monitor if and what they do to also gain knowlege.

It seems like a very good book for a knowledgeable person. Would it be appropriate for a beginner?

@Lostsoul62 : Woudl you have the kindness to message me, I'd like to ask you a short question about the book, thank-you.

You wouldn't be able to answer him anyway. You need 100+ posts in order to PM anyone on the forum.
