I have this issue...

In attempting to clone from one laptop HDD that has 40 GB to another that has 80 GB, I wasn't able to do so. I get this message, "USB Device Not Recognized" because it malfunctioned. I was sure the 80 GB hard drive that's getting cloned worked so I switched them and 80 GB in my laptop and it works. So I don't know why I'm receiving this message as there's nothing wrong with it and I should be able to clone it.

I wouldn't clone from a usb drive. Put both drives in a desktop computer and clone that way.

That is why every laptop user should have one that has the mediabay. pop your CD drive out, install the HDD to the mount and slide it in. Don't even have to shut the computer down on some of them.

Is all the cd caddy are the same connection? same standard or different one for different make laptops?
Thanks

The different laptop brands have different modules. I know the connector is the same between my D630 and the M90, but the retaining equipment is different. Either way it is useful to have one for your laptop in case you need to do stuff like this. They are only like $15 to get.

I got a few of these. so never have any problem to clone drives, only problem I have is to clone a larger drive to a smaller one even the larger drive has almost no files in it.

I have a similar device (the Tigerdirect Ultra brand) that works very well. I've never had any issues and I've used it to clone several drives, both smaller and larger. I have a copy of Norton Ghost that I use, but Drive Image XML works pretty well, too. The bad thing about DI XML is that after you clone it, you have to repair the MBR after you do it, but that's easy enough.
