Changing mobo

Hello my USB ports have failed me. They still have power but no longer recognize USB devices. I have reinstalled drivers and even done a clean install of vista, 5 times, to no avail. So I have come to the conclusion It is my mobo. I have recently upgraded to windows vista premium 64 bit from vista home 32 bit. The reason I say this is because I want to swap out my mobo. I want to do a direct swap, change the old mobo for the same exact one, so that there is as liitle room for complications as possible. My mother board is a MCP73M01H1 (Napa) and came with my HP pavillion a6300f. What do I need to know before i swap out the old mobo for a replacement one? Can i just swap them and thats it or is there more to it? Also I have a MSI r6870 hawk. Should I run my video through this during initial install of my mobo or wait till everthing is set up. I know it has not been a problem when clean installing Vista. Thank you for any help.

Like I was just saying to another member, you NEED to get the exact same motherboard from either eBay or HP. You may just have the USB controller for the mobo corrupt, sometimes you have to install those separately from Windows to get them to work correctly. You should be able to get that directly from HP. Again, make sure that you get the SAME mobo, usually can't replace commercial mobos with anything else...

Have you been using the 6870 all along? Did you buy a better power supply? The 6870 requires a decent amount of power and using an OEM psu just won't push it. If you didn't upgrade the power supply then its a possibility that you have burnt up the motherboard by not using a powerful enough psu. I would recommend using a 550 watt unit from corsair, antec, xfx or something similar. Your system only has a 250 watt stock power supply and would do damage pretty quick if you didn't upgrade it.

Take out the videocard before installing windows, thats so the drivers for the board/usb and onboad video drivers will get installed. if you have the video card in the computer when windows is installed the usb port drivers might not get installed.
