Purpose built PC

Greetings :) This is my 1st post here and I'm not what you'd call "state of the art", so bare with me.
I'm trying to help out a friend build a desk top he can use for video processing as part of his new business. Everything I've cobbled together so far has just been general household use, like the computer I'm on now. I'm a mechanic, not a computer tech. So this is a little out of my league. His "off the shelf" HP will do what he wants, but it takes a very long time to process an hour video. So he needs something that can speed up the process. All the help I can get will be appreciated.

What's the budget?
Where/what country so we know where you can buy from?
Do they need only the tower portion?
Do they need an OS, like Windows 7?

Well you could get some nice parts depending on budget.

Like these for example:

Core i5 2400 - more than enough basically.
ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA1155 Motherboard
8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM
Radeon HD6870 or nVidia GTX560
500W Corsair/XFX/Antec PSU
Corsair Carbide 300R Case

Not too much and a good rig there. CPU can always be replaced wth an i3 2100 or if yo want more performance i7 2700k for example. Or even IvyBridge with the Z77 Chipset.

We are in the US. He has the software he needs, just needs the hardware. I think he said the editing software he is using is from Adobe. I'll get more details from him when I can find him. He is just starting out and has done some weddings, business meetings, and training videos. He is adding effects (audio and video), doing and exposure color corrections, he is getting into it. (example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX6ZlD4ou20&feature=relmfu) I will be using a full tower with a 1,000 watt power supply to to grow into. His budget is $5K without a video card.

hi. with those programs you should deffinatly look into an i7, high memory bandwidth so socket 2011 motherboard for quad channel memory, and a video card made by nvidia. dont bother with amd cards if those are the programs that he is going to be using.
those programs support cuda technology, which only nvidia cards have. is what this technology does is while working on a project in cs6 or after effcts, there are 2 major things that take place, if using an nvidia video card. first of all, there are many effects that can be done in these programs. lots of them really put a strain on the system, and if you have alot going on, then it can consume your system. while all of these effects can be rendered by the cpu, alot of them can also be rendered by a gpu that supports cuda (nvidia). by adding this equation, what would have taken say, 20 minutes to be rendered by the cpu alone, it only took 1 minute to do the same job with the gpu helping out. some effects will have to be rendered by the cpu, but those that are able to be rendered by the gpu, will be. thats alot of time saved on projects when their high def.

second thing that is benifetting from cuda tech. is when you have your project up and your adding a nd tweaking effects, it will give you a smoother if not perfectly smooth play back and you will be able to shuffle forwards and backwards smoothly as well. with just a cpu, you cn for get about that ability.

i say the i7, bacause it has hyper threading, and will help out alot in rendering. you should get at least 16 gigs of ram as well, since projects can use up alot of ram quick. if you need me to post links to parts that would work for your friend, then let me know.

Humm, thanks for the insight. I was leaning in the direction of an AMD FX8150. Being an 8 core processor I figured it could handle the larger demand. Pros/cons? I am also looking into 32 gigs of ram. He hasn't really decided which way to go on a video card yet, but I already had nvidia based cards in mind. So far I'm looking at an AMD FX8150, an MSI FXA-GD80, and 32 gigs of DDR3-1600 ram. A full tower and a 1000 watt power supply. I'll look into the i7 and do some comparisons. The big trick is for me to figure out "what does it all mean".

The FX-8120/8150 isn't the greatest CPU ever, an i7 would smoke it even though the i7 is only a quad-core (but it does have 8 threads). I'd honestly go for an i7 3770K or an older i7 2600K or a 2700K if the 3770K is too expensive. 32GB of RAM seems like quite a lot, I'd go for 16GB (2x8GB DIMMs) for the time being and see how he gets on. If he needs more he can easily add another pair of 8GB DIMMs later on to get 32GB.

If he has a $5.000 budget, he could purchase some pretty good stuff.
For video editing I would probably recommend something like:

  • ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
  • Intel Core i7-3930K
  • Corsair H100
  • Kingston HyperX 1600MHz 32GB (4x8GB or 8x4GB)
  • NVIDIA GTX 680 x2 in SLI

go to Price Wach and you can see whot is aviable, and use that as refrance for price and then compare with Micro Center for curent price.
check for Bare Bone System and Complete System with OS.
you have to write that down or you get easy lost.

yeah, with a $5000 budget, he really needs to just got into a socket 2011, and a 3930k i7 cpu. it will have 6 cores with 12 threads, and will smoke any quad core out there in the video aditing process. like others have said, the amd chips just arnt worth getting , especialy with a budget of $5k. and there is no point in getting 2 x gtx 680's. adobe does not support sli, so only a single card is required. here is a list of things that will help you out with deciding what to get:

case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139006 or something to yur liking

power supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139014

motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157285 i suggest asrock, since they have a feature caled xfast ram, which allows you to create a virtual drive using available ram. this is extremly
helpful in adobe, to use as your workin drive, since the bandwidth of a standard ssd is about 5oo mps, and xfast ram drive will be 4000 mbs, making your project process faster, since it wont have to read and write to 1 drive at the same time.

cpu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116492

cpu cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181017

ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231572

video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130785 this card has 4 gigs on the card, compared tothe standard 2 gigs

ssd drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227763 put all your programs on here. blazing fast, and keeps the pc looking clean since you dont need any wires plugged into it.

hd: 2 x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236243 put these 2 in a raid 0, for speed, to use as your scratch disc in adobe, and for storage of all his projects.

blue ray/dvd: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106348 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106333

memory card reader: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820223109

im not sure if you need a monitor, keyboard and mouse and speakers or windows 7 install disc, but this build comes to about $3500. so that leaves you with about $1500 left over, incase you do need these thngs. this is just a rough draft, but i think its a great video editing power house, and will last you a very very long time. youreally cant go wrong with these parts
