Website design cost.

Hi.

I know this is a tricky request, but i'd appreciate some 'quotes' for a website akin to this: hoseandhydraulicsgroup.co.uk

I'm thinking of having my own site built - a company similar to the above- and the formatting/content of the above is pretty much perfect.

I'm planning on approaching some web-designers this week, so I want to avoid being ripped off. I'd like to go into discussions with an idea of how much it should cost.

Appreciate your help, guys.

Well I can tell you right now it isn't cheap. I was looking to make a website, But it will cost about 110 if you do it yourself. If you have it done by someone else, you're looking at over $1000. And that is on the cheap side.

........You look in very wrong places.....

I did my own website. It costs me $5 a month and $9 a year for the domain.

Hm. 1K? Really?

I own 4 websites. Two of these I coded from scratch. Another uses a free wordpress blog theme. and the other hasn't been developed yet.
$0 so far.
Okay, fine, you want a web designer to do it. Look at places like ODesk where you will find a ton of highly qualified web devs for a couple bucks a hour. Like $5.
So, we'll say it takes 6 hours to write the website OP linked to. (which is plenty reasonable, i might add) That makes $30 for the website.

Moving on, Domains. They were cheaper when i got mine ($5 i think), but a .com or .org will run you about $9 a year.

Hosting? Sure. I pay $7 a month for hosting for all my websites though kuzhost.com Yeah, that's total.
I also own a VPS server for file serving for my linux distribution. That runs me a whopping ~$3.50 a month.

Grand total for me? $146 for one year with 4 websites and two servers.
Estimate for him? Everything including web dev work, a couple hours for graphics, domain and hosting? About 65 a year, figuring $50 for webdev and graphic work. By yourself? about $60

Please try to have some kind of evidence for your future claims Dragonuv, $1000 for this is a ludicrous estimate.

Um, I am talking about someone making the whole thing for, from start to end, with 30-40 different links. I say that, because I know a person who does this stuff, and she said that is what it costs. And my mom had one done, and around there is what she paid. And not a 1 or two page thing.

Did you even look at the link in OP's post? It's a fairly simple straightforward website. I'm currently talking to a webdev I know and he said it would cost nothing near $1k. Like not even close. He doesn't like to give fixed prices, but hourly he would charge about $8 a hour. And as I've said before, it's not a complicated site. It has a couple pages, a few pictures and a link to a PDF. That would not take 125 hours. (125 hrs * 8 a hour = $1K)

yea, well the person I know, does so much, it'll take weeks till it's up and done.

Built and designed several websites myself. It's $40 a year for hosting, $10 for a domain, and I'd say about $30 for the design if I were to sell it on one site.

WTF are you talking about??

If you make your own website the only thing you're paying is the domain name (around 10$ a year) and the hosting (usually around 30$ a month depending what you need, you can also find some for free).

And someone charging you 1000$ for a website is trying to scam you buddy ;)

WTF, I am trying to help, (from past experience) And I am getting hammered on how wrong I am. So I try to stay away for off topic, and all I get is a group of people wtfing, and telling me how wrong I am. That may be, but I only tell from what has happened to me. So calm the hell down, for crying out loud.

Dragunov,

It's not that you are wrong... it's more that you are not right...

Basically people who are clueless as to web design, such as your mom apparently, don't really know the amount of work it takes to create a website and will pay large amounts, like $1000, for a simple website. There are also many web developers who don't mind charging clueless people that amount of money.

I personally can't do that. It feels wrong. I know damn well that I am just installing free themes and doing a bit of customization, yet I could bill a clueless client a lot of money.

If you have some idea about websites, then you can get it done for a lot cheaper. As Bobby says, you can hire someone on oDesk and get them to code your website. It won't cost you much.

Only noobs get charged a lot for simple web development. And believe me, that website is dead simple and would not take long. Your friend probably would take a few weeks to get the website up, because if she only took a few days, it would be harder to justify the price she's asking for.

Knowledge comes from past experience AND research, which you didn't do. Therefore you answered a topic without any knowledge. This is why I WTFed. No hard feeling dude, make some researches before you answer ;)

Junior Front end webdesign developer for webfoo http://webfoo-london.co.uk/ here. I can charge you with 2000$ for a website, if you want a massive database driven multi-style multi-lingual account handling website. It's all about complexity. For a webdesigner, the amount you pay for the domain is irrelevant, we just make the thing running. I can charge you 250 $ for a simple 5 pages presentation website. It's all about the complexity of the webpage. The prices usually aren't overcharged, because it's a massive amount of work for any database-driven website, because besides the website, you also must make the admin area, which handles all the content.. There's a whole lot of work then..
