Gigabyte HD 7850 OC... unimpressed

So i put together a new system and so far i'm impressed, yet unimpressed.

Specs are as follows

i5 2550k at stock 3.4ghz clock(Will OC soon)
Gigabyte Z68X UD3H B3 mobo
8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz DDr3 memory
Gigabyte HD 7850 OC (975mh core 1200mhz)
Corsair TX750 bronze certified psu.

System runs games fine and all that jazz but i see everyong OC'ing their HD 7850s to near 7950 speeds on air. I can't even OC 5mhz without system failures. Ive used Asus GPU Tweak and tried CCC with no avail.

Anyone care to help?

you have to increase the voltage, but overclocking is a chip to chip thing, you can get one that will easily hit 100mhz over or one that can't go 10 without a big voltage jump. Really you shouldn't need to overclock it much if at all for 99% of games

Sorry to bump but I've figured out that gigabyte's design for the HD7850 is poorly prepared for overclocking compared to the reference design. For anyone looking for an HD 7850 look at other brands(Powercolor and Diamond seem to be overclocking beauties due to their exact reference replicas).

I don't know but the one you bought is already OC, maybe it's already at it limits...

You never mentioned what you're using to cool it? I realize you expect to see good results on air, but what air cooling are you using exactly? Also, if you're dealing with a pre-overclocked card, it's not going to be as easy to do as it would be with a reference. The thing about pre-overclocked cards is they are clocked higher at the factory and guaranteed to work under those settings. The company doesn't design them to be used past those clock settings, so generally they won't work well when you exceed them. The reference cards give you more freedom however, a nice aftermarket cooler on those and you can go wild. The thing you gotta realize though is the 78xx series has horrible drivers for one thing, and if you get the card too hot and leave it that way - it's going to fail on you. The card you have is already at it's recommended setting, and under warranty as long as it stays at stock clocks. Not saying you shouldn't play with it, it's just a point of interest worth consideration.

I'm aware that its factory OC'd. I'm also aware Gigabyte probably designed it to work at the speeds they incorporated. The cooler on it is the Windforce cooler and I dont think its a real issue as the cards runs extremely cool.

Why do you want so hard to OC your card?...
It's a great card and you bought already an OC.
You're not gonna gain much performance anymore with a higher OC.

Was trying to futureproof myself as much as I could. No matter, I sold the card and purchased something else.

Overclocking is no way to future proof yourself. There is usually very little to gain from overclocking as opposed to superior hardware.

And trying to overclock an already overclocked chip? Meh, I wouldnt do it. Especially if you can already max out every game fine there is no need to risk destroying your hardware that cost alot of money.
