PC does not load, monitor just blinks

Hi guys,

For awhile now my computer would take some time to load. It turns on and the monitor power just blinks. I have to press restart on the computer about 20 times in order for the monitor to display windows loading. It has gotten progressively worse to to the point now where I cant even get the computer to load. After pressing restart several times the pc shuts off. The computer is about 4 years old and the monitor is less than a year old. The monitor works fine with xbox, which rules it out of being the problem.

I have tried switching VGA cables and have made sure all cables are connected correctly. Also, I dont hear the hard drive loading as it usually does, and I don't hear windows logging in or any other sounds through the speakers.

I am suspecting there is a problem with either the hard drive or the power supply? What do you guys think? I do have an external hard drive. Would there be a way to copy everything from the current hd in the pc to the external, and then load windows from the external hd?

Thanks for the help.

Sounds like the computer is having issues POSTing. Try reseating your RAM, then if that doesn't work, your GPU, and then if that doesn't work, your CPU. Be very careful while doing that.

like lucasbytegenuis said monitor problems are usually RAM or GPU related problems i doubt it is a HDD problem.

have you tried a different power supply to the pc?

Looks like it is asking for retirement.
Try checking the capacitors of your components, motherboard, video card, and your power supply. You may also try to clean your system by scanning your computer with antivirus, ccleaner and malwarebytes. Then finally you may try isolating your components if you have spares for it.

Those are basic troubleshooting that I use and hopefully help you.

it could also be that you have a problem with the motherboard as that sometimes is a symptom of peripherals not functioning properly on the board. also check that you heatsink and cpu fan are clean as it helps.
