My friend got one of those Roxio Game Capture cards and it works OK. Cost him £60 I think, but Roxio do make an HD version for a little bit more (I think £30 or so more) which I would probably recommend you buy if you have the money.

You could just get a USB extension lead which runs from the capture card to your PC and that would probably be OK if your PC and TV are in different rooms.

Here's the one my friend bought http://www.amazon.com/Roxio-248400-...1364806718&sr=8-1&keywords=roxio+game+capture

Here's the HD one they do http://www.amazon.com/Roxio-Game-Ca...1364806718&sr=8-2&keywords=roxio+game+capture

I'd get the HD one.

A really cheap one is the Dazzle DVC100, if you record with VirtualDub instead of the one they give you, you can get decent results.

I think you may have difficulty finding one if it needs to be really portable...

Portable? Under $200? 720p? Best choice by far? The elgato Game Capture HD from elgato. Priced at about $180, it scrapes the top of the budget, but will more than qualify for all of your needs.

edit: Oh, and if you need it to reach extra far, I would suggest just buying a ridiculously long HDMI cable from amazon or somewhere to string it between devices, because trying to find a capture card that comes with cords longer than like 6 feet, is grasping for a shadow my friend.

i cant have wires running all over the place, the el gato looks pretty good and the avermedia live hd portable looks good too but its still not out yet and the price is not final. they say its around 160-180 bucks

Hauppauge usually has high quality cards but the software can be "iffy" at times. But still, I'd probably stick with them or Avermedia.

However, be sure you split the output. Most any capture card has some form of buffer lag. My WinTV PVR-1800 has around a 5 second delay so it's impossible to play while recording.

Iffy isn't the half of it, lol.

I run HDMI. I have an HDMI splitter from the box one to the tv, another to computer. I have to select my xbox to 1080i or the card won't read. Here's the iffy part, I have to turn on my computer and run Showbiz first before my xbox will start. I have no freaking clue why. Probably because it can't detect a correct display or something, but I just deal with it.

Just use an easycap usb card. Its what I use. No bigger than a large USB memory stick. Composite and S-Video ports on it too.

The only problem is that the software is iffy on Windows Vista/7, it BSODs if you unplug the device, but if you use some software like Debut Video Capture, or a webcam recording program which allows you to change the input, you should be fine. Also, if you want HD sound, make sure that you use a separate cable for the White and Red plugs, do not use the Easycap plugs as the sound quality is awful. If you use a Red+White to Headphone jack converter, you can get surround sound through it.

I doubt the easycap has 720p recording capabilities though. I had a old thing that looked very similar, and it's maximum settings looked similar to VHS tape quality.

That's not HD.

As for the lag, this is what the site claims:

"The gameplay is passed through to the TV via HDMI – in pristine quality, without delay."
