Is this normal?

Few days ago I installed windows 7 OS. It seems that everything works fine, but always when I turn on computer, it shows "Configuring windows update" and restarts few times. And always when I turn off computer, it shows that it is installing updates. How it can be so many updates? My laptop has the same OS, and has no updates these days. Even now, after just turning on computer, Near the "Shut down" button there is an update icon.

Try to do the updates manually, then disable automatic mode in control panel and see the results. I had similar issue in very first version of 7, when there was multiple updates, including update system (each one inastalled after restart), but it finished installing everything after few restarts (5).

Sounds normal. Make sure to manually check all the updates your downloading/installing.

In my experience, Windows only downloads a handful of updates between each reboot.

Sounds like you have automatic windows update enabled, just go to start button - all programs - windows update - change settings and select check for updates but let me download and install.

The easiest way to tell is if you're getting the exact same number of updates every shutdown. If it's a different number of updates then they are different updates. Windows can sometimes get into a state where it try to install the same updates over and over, so like James said you can go into Windows Update and see exactly what updates it is installing.

You should also check to see if you have service pack one for Windows 7 installed. Click the start menu, right click "Computer" and select "Properties". Under "Windows Edition" it should say "Service Pack 1". A service pack is a large collection of updates, and if you don't have it then you can download it straight from Microsoft's website and install all of those updates in one go.

There are still lots of updates after SP1 though, hundreds even so don't be surprised if when it keeps on updating.
