File download speed

Hi. Can anyone give me an idea what is an acceptable download speed for a file. I want some idea before i contact plusnet to complain about it. Although our internet speed is never below 10meg, files take ages to download as the speed is usually around 60KBps and is often as low as 20KBps. Is this normal or should it be higher. None of the files are p2p.
Thanks

If you have over 10 mbps you shouldn't see anything below 1250 KB/s. Post a speedtest from speedtest.net to make sure. It could very well be from the servers you're downloading from or it's you're connection.

I agree with Gooberman, go to www.speedtest.net and post the image of your speedtest here, then we can find out if it's an issue with your connection or just where you are downloading from.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/3455408280.png.

I was downloading 2 different drivers from Hewlett packard web site when I last had these speeds which was about 10.30 this morning

When I first ran the speed test it gave me an ISP of a company in America. After rebooting router we are back on plusnet. I phoned them about this american ISP and apparantly they have bought a lot if IP addresses from this company and they still show up as the previous company which was called Infonet.
So possibly this causing the problem???

Do you only get the slow speeds from the HP site or from others as well? If it was just the HP website then it's probably on their end and not yours.

Well that's weird, i'd probably test on another computer and if it's the same then i'd contact the ISP

Keep in mind there are 8 bits in a byte.

10 Mbps = 1.25 MB/sec max

If it's consistently low between a lot of different sites it may be worth contacting the ISP. Since you can get your rated speed through speedtest though it may just be an issue with remote end servers.

Do you get the same behavior with a service like Steam or downloads from Microsoft? These are generally more reliable indicators and could highlight if the issue resided somewhere else.

If you have 10 mbps you shouldn't see anything above 1250 KB/s.

Fixed...
