Sudden Multi-Failing USB Ports

My current system was built in May of 2012 and has been rock solid until like now.

I have had 4 out of 6 USB ports fail on me at once. I can't scan, can't print and the only two that are working I have both my mouse and keyboard in them because I had to transfer them yesterday the ones I had them connected to for almost 2 years. My printer was working fine yesterday and then that port failed today. I have tried booting and rebooting to no avail.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H. If anyone can recommend to me a good solid Z77 board I'd appreciate it because if the last two ports go I won't be able to use my keyboard or mouse and then I'll have some real grief to deal with.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

If you still have the receipt, gigabyte boards have a 3 year warranty. Contact them for a rma and get a replacement. Even if you don't have the receipt, they might be able to check warranty status by the serial number.

Let me ask you this johnb35: Could it be corrupted USB files? If it is a possibility could uninstalling everything USB related out of hardware and then rebooting would Windows possibly fix by applying drivers?

Thanks for the reply.

All you can do is try. But if you have a usb mouse, you won't be able to complete removal. What I would do is completely tear the system down and rebuild it with laying the motherboard on a piece of cardboard and test the ports. Does your case have usb ports and do they work?

Possibility, go to Device manager and uninstall any USB port that's not working. Reboot and see what happens.

Yes, case does have USB ports and they do work. These Z77 boards were a bit wonky to work with when it came to USB 3.0 ports. But as I said no issues for almost two years and then all of a sudden multiple port failures.

Thanks for your help guys.

Well I put a support ticket into Gigabyte and I'll see if they respond by Wednesday.

Okedokey: Thanks for those links. The Intel link said my chipset was valid but that was about it. If there is a chipset update it didn't state that there is. Nor was their any mention of USB 3.0 but if I am not mistaken Intel provides the drivers for the 2.0 and the 3,0 is VIA.

The VIA USB webpage would not connect regardless of what ISP I attempted to use.

Again, thanks for the links.

Update:

Gigabyte's support actually got back to me and has asked me to a) see if my keyboard works in the BIOS in the failed USB ports (it doesn't) and b) to see if my keyboard works in those slots under Safe Mode.

The thing is when I go to restart my system and press F8 my system still loads to the Windows screen (I've tried several times). I can't get Windows to give me the screen option to restart in Safe Mode. Any ideas?

My OS is on an SSD and I do have a hard drive for games, etc. The SSD is first bootable in priority over the had drive.

Thanks.

I have tried holding F8 in numerous scenarios but I wound up having to do the very step I didn't want to do and that was not allowing Windows to fully load and hitting the restart button. However, the option came up for Safe Mode and so I proceeded to see if my keyboard would work.

The failed ports do not work in either the BIOS or in Safe Mode.

Thanks.

Update: Even before I had a chance to tell Support about the port failure under Linux Mint they issued me an RMA which I should be getting in two business days. Thought you deserved to know.

This sounds like a bent socket CPU pin to me...

Hmmm, really? Why? I am not doubting you just wondering why you suspect this issue.

As I said originally this system has been running stable for almost 2 years. It fired up first time and has been running flawlessly until now.

The USB system runs through the northbridge on the CPU. Where a bent cpu socket pin is not connecting to the CPU, a subsystem can fail.. Ive seen this on PCIe slots that wont work for examples, even though the computer will post, boot into windows etc.

Just wanted to give you guys an update. I did RMA the board and Gigabyte eventually returned said board. The only paper work that came back said repair with nothing else. So I guess they realized it was the USB ports after all.

Put board back in and all is going well.

Thanks for all your help.
