All Chrome Bookmarks gone

HI, I am running XP SP3. I have the latest version of Chrome.

Can somebody please tell me where I can find the "bookmarks.bak" file? This is supposed to be the backup file that chrome stores/saves all the bookmarks every time Chrome is closed.

In fact I can't even find any files AT ALL for Chrome. Mozilla files are there in plain sight under Program Files but I cannot find ANY Chrome files.

I turned my computer on after it crashed and all my bookmarks had gone, whether I sync'ed to my log in or not. So it's not a simple matter of doing this, I want to go to the BAK file.

Thanks for any help.

I believe the file (and the rest of your Chrome files) is stored somewhere in your appData folder (if you're on a Windows machine), hidden away in your user directory.

Firstly, you'll want to enable the viewing of hidden files (since the appData folder is hidden), which can be done in Folder Options via the Control Panel (or something like that).

Then, the bookmarks.bak file should be located in:

C:\Users\<yourNameHere>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

*EDIT*

I just saw that you're on XP. The above filepath is for Windows 7. You will still need to enable the viewing of hidden files if you haven't already done so.

Now your file should be here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<yourNameHere>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

Hi NVX, thanks for the reply and suggestions. I feel I am getting somewhere -at least I can find the Chrome files now. I did what you said and went to Control Panel and enabled hidden files and opened up all those areas and had a look (see attached screen dump) but I can still not see the bookmarks folder or any *.bak file.

Later I will do a search for all BAK files and see what comes up.

Maybe the problem is that my google account name (previously, before all this happened) was different to my computer XP sign in (user) name; different gmail address etc. So maybe that had something to do with it. However there should still be that backup file somewhere.

Let me know if you have any other suggestions on where to look.

thanks

PS, I had a look in all those folders in the 'Default' folder

I just found them. I used the search function in Windows Explorer and they were actually in the place you said, however for some reason I didn't see them initially, maybe I was too intent on looking in each folder in that folder, instead of seeing the individual files lower down.

Now I have to work out how to use this file to put them back :(

thanks for the help
