Need help with ASUS Port Forwarding

I’d appreciate any help I can get because I’m pulling my hair out now.

It worked immediately prior to upgrading the firmware and I believe it’s pretty simple but I got to be missing something.

I downloaded the Lorex Auto Port Forwarding program, but it has 5 or 6 port errors while entering info into the new upgraded firmware and I can’t figure it out. I do know that the Lorax Service Tech had 2 or 3 lines with the port numbers in different fields if I remember correctly. He was moving the numbers around the fields trying to get it to work.

Now besides the DVR IP address, there are only 3 port numbers for the DVR.
1) Client Port: 9000
2) HTTP Port: 80
3) Mobile Port: 1025

The ASUS RT-N56U has PortRange and Local Port, so what do I put into these. Also I’m just not sure about the Protocol it has TCP and not sure it is correct?

I'd just make 3 entries, one for each port.

Port range is the external port, local IP for your server and local port for the port your server's service is listening on.

If in doubt for protocol you could put both, although most non-realtime traffic utilizes TCP.

Thanks I'll try that

I'd say all those are likely TCP ports, and opening them on UDP as well basically doubles the amount of attack "holes".

BTW, try to avoid using port 80 if you can. Having that open on a home network is a very bad idea!

Oh wow! That's not good and I don't know how to fix it because thats what Lorex uses. I'm not sure if I can go in the Lorex site and change it there. It is Password protected although I don't know how good that is.

Anyway I still haven't got it working and it might be the Port Range. I don't know if 9000 is the range or 80, but I think the Port number is 80. Could I be entering the 9000 wrong. I'm asking because I was watching the auto program enter it and it was more like 9000:9000.

For ports like 80 I would open it on the outside on a different port such as 50000. I'd also make sure you have things like default login accounts disabled.

Leaving open UDP ports is irrelevant if there are no services listening on those ports.

For the range you could also do 9000-9000 or similar. You would also have to make sure you have the appropriate rules in the software firewall of the PC/server to allow connections from external networks.

OK I'm still trying to get this port forwarding running. There must be a kick start that I'm missing.
Do I have to enter something in the Basic Config?

There is a few thing to select besides the Enable Port Forwarding.
Famous Server List although I don't think there is anything there.
Famous Game List and I know I don't need any of those.
FTP Server Port with a number already filled in, but I don't know what it is for.

Here is a photo of the Famous Server List

Okay, I'll try to help. I don't have this router so I could be wrong.

In the port forwarding list in the service name just give this port a name like Client Port. Now in the port range I think the format may include a colon. So enter 9000:9000. In local port enter 9000.

In the famous server list chose HTTP as that is port 80.

In the port forwarding list in the service name name it mobile port. Set the port range 1025:1025. In local port enter 1025.

Local ports really don't matter so long as your computer isn't using them. You will need to set a static IP address for your computer or DVR. Enter the computer's or DVR's IP address in the local IP box. For protocal I waould chose both. Unless you specifically know what protocal to use for each port.

You would be surprised at how many games use port 80. Which I think is dumb. You could get away with using a port triggering program and use a port like 8080 to trigger 80, but that is a computer based app and your DVR will need port 80 it looks like.

like I said in the other thread you may be interested in the Untangle firewall/network intrusion software since you are using port 80. Your Untangle computer or cheap server would go in front of your router.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is typically port 21. Not sure why it's set to 2021. That could be a security thing. You don't need FTP. Clear the number in the FTP port if you can before you save your port settings.

Make sure you password protect the camera. I know a Google hack that will list a ton of unsecured IP cameras.

Here's my Asus router config for reference, simply enter in the port number, IP of the device you want it forwarded to, and then port number again.

YES,YES, YES Finally got it to work.

I tried 4 or 5 more times rearranging the port information without success and decide to reboot the router. I lost all the information and had to start fresh putting in all the setting for passwords and WIFI information. I then tried the Lorex Auto Port forwarding program again and this time there were no errors. :good:

I turned on my tablet and YES all my cameras were showing. I have no idea what was going on but I suspect that there was something leftover in the router data from before the upgrade. The funny thing is that now I only have one line of Port Forwarding data and it was one off the combinations that I used.

I have no idea why, but it’s working now and that’s all I care about.

Anyway I want to thank all you guys for your help because I was seriously thinking of buying a new router.
