Putting everything together..

Hi all, I'm building my first computer from scratch and i made this thread so I can come here and ask questions if i panic  I'm looking forward to building, but i'm terrified i'll do something wrong..

This is my build:
MOBO: ASUS X99-DELUXE LGA2011-v3
CPU: Intel Core i7-5820k
RAM: Crucial DDR4 2133MHz 16GB
GPU: ZOTAC GeForce GTX 980
PSU: SuperNOVA 750 G2
HDD: Desktop HDD 2TB 7200RPM
SSD: 840 EVO Basic 250GB
Case: CM Storm Scout II Advanced Gaming

(Thank you for all the help I got with this in my first thread here :) :) )

I haven't gotten all the parts yet, only the motherboard, PSU, SSD and HDD today. The rest I think will arrive on Monday or Tuesday and I can start building.

I'm looking at these parts now and I have some questions as i'm trying to sort it out and prepare for the building:
* I'm thinking about installing the OS on my SSD - do i plug the SSD in Sata 1, and the HDD in Sata 2? Can I use the Sata Express port or do I ignore it?
* With the mobo I got a Hyper M.2x4 card or something, am I suppose to use this or is it just an accessory for something else?
* This came with the mobo, what is it for? (picture)

1) I think you'd need a specific SATA Express device, but any other SATA port should do for your drive and HDD.

2) That card is really just if you wanted to use an M.2 drive without an M.2 socket.

3) Not sure off hand, it's probably in the manual.

By all means install your OS to your SSD and use your hard drive for your games.

That's what i'm planning to do :) Should i connect the SSD in the Sata 1 port then, or is it the same where I put them?

So my SSD is not a SATA Express device and i should connect them to one of the other SATA ports?

Thank you both! :D Sorry for my stupid questions. I think i will learn a lot the next few days though, looking forward to start building. I just hope i won't set anything on fire or something

An other question: I was looking at the cables that came with the PSU, and the SATA cables has three SATA connections (not sure what to call them), am i supposed to put both the SSD and the HDD on that same cable?

It looks kind of like this:

You can put both your hard drive and your SSD on the same cable. As Voyagerfan99 rightly points out they are your SATA power cables that run from your power supply to your drives. Your motherboard should supply your motherboard SATA cables for the transfer of data between your motherboard and your drives. So you'll need two cables for each drive: Power and data transfer. Don't worry. They will look different from each other.

Yes, go ahead and connect your SSD to the SATA 1 port. It is not SATA Express.

Btw, YouTube has some really good videos that will help you understand how to do go about building a PC.

Thank you :) I found the correct cables then, one from the power supply and the cable to the motherboard. I just wasn't sure about the SATA power supply because the cable looked a little weird with three connectors..

Will look more on YouTube, now i'm mostly worried about the front panel wires, they look difficult to find and place correctly. But i'll try tomorrow when i get rest of the parts.

More (possibly stupid) questions; what decides which drive will be C:\? Is it the SATA ports, or is it set up in BIOS?

and - I found out that the mobo will be connected to the PSU with two connections, but is this with two seperate cables? I found a cable named Mobo (24 pins) and an other cable named CPU (8 pins), is this correct? I just thought it was going to be one dual cable or something for each port and not two seperate cables :)

What ever drive windows is installed on will be labeled as your "C" drive. It doesn't matter what drive is hooked up to your sata ports unless you have 2 different sata controllers on your motherboard.

The motherboard requires 2 power connections.

1. A 24 pin main connector
2. Either a 4 pin or 8 pin cpu power connector

Both must be plugged in for the motherboard to work.

About C, that make sense. And i found the right cables then :)

Loving this forum, thank you for the reply :)

Geoff shouldn't have cleared out his Photobucket. His how to build a PC 101 was nice and detailed.

Ugh, I need help :( I am finished with putting everything together, but fails at booting up. Boot device led is red and i get CPU Fan error on my monitor, but i only have the case fans. After going to BIOS it just turns off.

I am so confused now :|

Did you attach the cpu cooling fan wires to the fan header on the motherboard? Hopefully you aren't running it without the heatsink and fan.

I was told i could wait with the heatsink and fan and only use case fans for now. Argh, am i missing a piece? :|

Okay, argghh, i ordered a heatsink and fan now, lesson learned.. Can it be something else causing the CPU fan error, or will it be alright when i get the heatsink?

Also, the computer does not detect my SATA drives, what can the reason be? I plugged them in the SATA 1 port and power supply on the PSU..

Who told you it was okay to run without the heatsink and fan? Until you get the one you ordered use the one that came with your processor. Whoever told you that advice was very wrong.

When I build a system I lay my motherboard out on the anti-static bag and the first thing I do is install the processor and heatsink and then the RAM before installing the motherboard in the case. Many will often install the video card as well. Then secure the motherboard on the standoffs and take it from there. Follow johnb35's advice.

You can't run without a cpu cooler. You will fry your processor without one. Use the cooler that came with the processor until you get the one you ordered or wait. If you use the one that came with the processor you will need to clean off the old thermal paste and apply new when the new fan comes in. Whoever told you to run without a cpu cooling fan doesn't know what they are doing.

I actually have a similar question. My PSU only has a four pin connector for CPU power, but my mobo needs an eight pin. My power adapter came, but do i actually need it, and should i not be overclocking it?

Unless you're using a fairly decent CPU it can run on just the 4-pin. However you should use an 8-pin.

I put everything together yesterday and it went fine. Started on first try and i love my new computer :)

However, just now i was playing a game and suddenly the computer just shut down. Motherboard leds (power button and tpu led is green) are on but it wont boot. What can the reason be? :|

Edit: i searched on google and found that the PSU could be broken. I detached it from my computer and tried the PSU with my old computer, and it worked alright.

So that must mean the PSU is fine? What else can be the problem?
