There will be a setting in your firewall that you will to change to allow network connectivity. What firewall are you using?

Should be a setting in windows firewall. Go into windows firewall in control panel and change settings to allow network discovery.

So if you have to turn the firewall off on the windows 7 machine then you need to do this.

That should in theory let you see other machines in your network and transfer files.

Go into the control panel, click on network and sharing center. On the top left, click on change advanced sharing options. In the following image, are the 3 options checked?

Thats why I'm having you go to the network and sharing center to see if it was already checked. In order to add an exception to the firewall would be to click on the change settings button to allow the "allow another program" button to become active. But I don't know if it will be listed in there. Windows firewall should allow network connectivity by default.

Try this. Go back into windows firewall and on the left hand side click on restore defaults and see if that fixes it.

You don't want a public network, you want home network. Check network and sharing center, what type of network does it say your connected to?

Just go through your firewall rules and be sure that file and printer sharing is enabled. If that doesn't make any different then leave the home group.
