Gtx 690 vs R9 290x 8Gb vapor X

Quick question, is it a worthwhile upgrade to go from a Gtx 690 that has been so good to me, to a R9 290x 8Gb vapor X? I know there isn't a huge performance difference between that and the 4Gb version. My gtx 690 however, is starting to wheeze with its 2gb Vram and games don't like SLI at all these days. I even have to disable the internal SLI for the dual gpu setup because of micro stuttering. Games are requiring 3gb+ to run well and I didn't want to spend 700$ on a 980 as I will be looking to go for another very high end card next year like a titan z or equivalent. What should I do?

A 290X would run all games perfectly, but a GTX 970 may be a good idea too, with 4 GBs of VRAM, they tear through games.

In benchmarks, the GTX 690 performs better, but that's because its basically SLI

However, the 970 brings higher clock speeds and more VRAM

I'd go for the GTX970 or R9 290X (4GB version) whatever is cheaper. They're equal in performance and will serve you well until you decide to got for that TITAN Z.

The titan is ok, the titan Z is even better but it has 2x titan gpu's in aswell. The microstuttering in the majority of high end games you can easily get around, the only game i get it for me is bf4 but i have since fixed that so it runs as smooth as a single card.

The titan is quite an outdated card such as the 780ti and gtx 980 are faster and the gtx 970/290x are not far behind.

I would personally not get the titan z as 2x gtx 980's/ 780ti's are faster and 2x 970's/290x's are not far off. Amd has the new 300 series soon aswell.

the 690's are very good cards, its a shame you cant add more vram as they would last a good while longer if that were possible :(.

Thanks for feedback. I went with Dual R9 290x 8gb Vapor X editions. I just couldnt stop drooling over the 8gb VRAM. It rivals GTX 980 SLI performance and in some cases surpasses GTX 970 performance. Its really close though. The only thing that bugs me about new gtx 900 series is that technically the r9 290x is a 1 year old card, and the gtx 900 series just came out, and offer small performance gains. They should be crushing it
