Problem with thermal gel

Everytime my computer overheats and everytime I replace the thermal gel, nyuuuuugh.

Sometime a while a ago my computer started overheating when it got too over processed and it just got worse and worse turns out that the thermal paste behind the cpu fan was melting so i replaced that and then it was good for 2 weeks or so and then it happened again and then i replaced it again (eat sleep rave repeat) eventually i replaced the cpu fan but the problem keeps happening. none of it seems to make much sense and i haven't found anywhere even close to a solution, could it be i am not using the right thermal paste because if so i have forgotten the brand and i don't have it anymore.

What thermal paste are you using? Get yourself a tube of Arctic Silver 5 and a good CPU cooler and be done with it.

I've never heard of thermal paste melting, in my experience it may dry up from being overheated, but not melt.

Use Arctic Silver as suggested and make sure you use only a very thin layer. You need to solve the problem of your cpu running too hot, thermal paste should last the life of the machine without being replaced. If your cpu is constantly running hot, it's lifetime will be severely curtailed.

What are you using for a cpu cooler? Are you using the stock heatsink/fan that came with it?

The word 'gel' makes me nervous, which specific compound were you using?

Also, how did you apply it? (thickness, surface area, etc)

Yeah this is my question. You're probably either not using the right paste or doing it wrong.

Thermal paste application is tricky. You want to avoid formation of air bubbles, since air is not the best conductor of heat, and also you need a uniform thickness application for the best results. I am sure we had a guide around on thermal paste application.(can't find it)

Also re-application of it in short intervals is also not recommended.

Anyways, as Travis said get a nice TIM like Arctic Silver, and if the problem still exists you might need an Aftermarket Cooler.

What are the temps you are seeing, and also what is your ambient temperature?
