what makes the GTX 970 so much better?

Hi there, I'm looking to learn more about video cards. I'm wondering what makes the GTX 900 series so much better than my video card (see signature), when it only has a 300 mhz difference in core speed?

Stay away from the GTX 970. Nvidia basically blatantly lied about the specs, and the card has bad frametime stutters when using more than 3.5GB of VRAM due to the physical memory configuration and die configuration. It also has less ROPS and less L2 cache than advertised.

Would recommend you find a 780 Ti or grab a GTX 980 instead

It is a new Gpu architecture so it requires less power, more performance per core/ shader, faster memory. It will also have more/larger cores and more efficient transistors. Core speed doesn't mean much anymore.

Clock speed isn't everything.

The 900 series is a couple generations after yours. Are you really expecting zero technological improvement from cards that were launched in 2012?

Also keep in mind that the 650 Ti was more of a 'value-oriented' card. Trying to compare it to a higher end 970/980 is pretty ridiculous.

The chart for specs highlights a lot of the differences. One of the main components that influences performance is the amount of CUDA cores, but all of the specs there are components of the total equation.

Do you own the GTX970? That Titan you have is in another league from the 970. The majority of every person that owns the 970, still thinks it is a great card, after knowing that Nvidia advertised incorrect specs. What are you going to say if next week, you find out the specs in GTX980 are also misleading? There is a big price difference between the GTX 970 and GTX 980, something to consider.
