1440 vs 4k

My 7850 is starting to show it's age so I am looking at new cards. To go along with a new card I figured up would move into a higher resolution as well. Most of what I find points to 1440 running much smoother for games.

I cannot decide what route to go so I was looking for opinions. Will 1440 be practical for a long time with 4k being out of reach? Or is tech going to update fairly quickly to allow games to be played on high settings at 4k with decent fps?

I would hate to pick up a monitor and card in the next few months when waiting a few more would introduce new gpus and cpus that could actually run 4k 60 fps.

Honestly I would just stick with 1440 but it really just depends how much you want to spend.

4k is manageable nowadays but ideally you'd want two 980TI's in sli because of the 6gb vram and sheer horsepower needed for 4k. Couple that with the extra cost of a 4k monitor and the price-tag is pretty steep. 1440 on the other hand is fine with just a single 290x, 980 or 980ti.

I'm pretty biased though with my opinion. My thought is that if you want to go beyond 1080 and run 1440p or 4k you should have a setup that at least comes close to maxing out settings on current games. I don't see the point in running that extra resolution at the price of turning settings down.

I agree on maxing settings if I go up to a higher resolution. My plan was to spend enough to get a 980ti and an acer predator 1440. For How much it is I could get 1 more card and go 4k. The problem I saw was that benchmarks never came out to good.

I hope that my i5 3570 and 16gb ram wouldn't be a bottleneck

Depends really the 16gb wont be a problem, the 3570 will be fine for 1 card (980 ti) but might struggle with two cards depending if the cpu is overclocked aswell.

If you can afford 4k then go for it, if not 1440p is still a great jump from 1080p.

If you can afford it get a g-sync (nvidia) or freesync (AMD) monitor aswell then it makes games much more enjoyable and the drops below 60fps are as smooth as butter.

If your in no rush hold on and wait to see what the new AMD cards have to offer.
