External HD as Server

I have a small tax and accounting office. Until now, I am running my office with only one laptop, which is having issues, I think will be in need for replacement and I am considering to buy an external hard drive (WD, 2T) to use a server.

I do not know if that is recommendable or not. Also, I want to install all my programs in the external drive instead the C disk in my computers. If that possible? Do you recommend it?

You need actual other computer components to run a server instead of just an external drive.

If you want Windows 7 you'll need to buy a refurbished laptop. Look into the Dell Clearance Outlet for a Dell Latitude E6430 or E6530 depending on what size screen yo want.

I would keep your programs installed on the main drive to avoid any problems.

If you want some kind of network storage, you could look into a simple NAS.

If you simply want to move programs to another computer and not clone the drive there is a software called EaseUS Todo PCTrans. At the time of this writing it is $50. http://www.easeus.com/pc-transfer/transfer-installed-programs-data-to-new-hard-drive.html

If you're up for a bit of DIY and have an external hard drive you could buy a Raspberry Pi and set up a simple samba share and have a network drive for $30. There are many tutorials for this online. If not it would be best to buy a NAS.
Unless it's for backup, I cannot see any advantages from moving your programs to a server
