Understanding My Wireless Laser Printer

Greetings all,

I recently obtained a Brother HL-2270/DW Wireless laser printer and I am having a few problems perceiving how it is utilized in wireless mode. There is a video that is posted on YouTube that shows everything step by step however, I am still at a loss and I am not sure if I'm allowed to post the link here.

I think it is possibly the way I am receiving how wireless is used with this printer. In this particular instance, I have a Toshiba laptop with built in wireless which is on and functional. I have installed all the drivers, etc. for the laser printer. I can hardwire the printer to my Toshiba without any problem however, if I disconnect the hardwire and attempt to print a test Word or text/notepad document, it fails as if the printer did not exist.

Is not in some way that Toshiba or any other wireless computer here supposed to detect the existence of a wireless printer and after some light configuration be able to print to it? Everything I saw in the video on YouTube and the manufacturers website shows nothing about connecting this to any type of wireless router, etc.

So, what am I doing wrong here? Thanks for any assistance and clarification you could supply!

Obviously. Because it is looking for the printer on a USB printer port.

As for how the wireless works:

The printer connects to a wireless network.

You run the software installation and tell it you are connecting wirelessly and it will configure the printer to connect to the SSID of the network you want to use it on. It also configures your laptop to print over the IP address the printer receives from the network.

Follow the manual if you need help.

There's a brief mention on connecting directly to the printer via wireless, but I don't know how it works with Brother printers (I've only done it with HP's) where you see the printer appear as an available wireless network and then can set the computer up to print that way. But that's very confusing and hard to do. It's best to just put it on a network.

Why would YouTube videos not be allowed?

If you Google your printer typing in the make and model adding the words 'user manual PDF' it should come up, download it and 'open' and find the appropriate section that tells you how to connect it wirelessly and go from there, in most cases you have to firstly manually input the wireless key of your router into the printer and it will say 'finding access point', which is your router, and then it may tell you to press and hold the WPS button on your router. There will probably be more to it than that but as I say, it will be in the printer user manual.

I already linked him to the manual, thank you very much.

Ok, let me locate the link and post it........

I get to the installation window titled "connecting your device and your computer" and that's it. (I am using win xp).

That will most likely mean that the printer is not compatible to your PC, or more precisely, the software that came with the printer is not compatible. Try by uninstalling the printer and reinstall the printer software disk to see if that cures the problem, it may not have installed correctly in the first instance. On the Brother website it says that this model is no longer available, discontinued.

He said he was able to print hardwired fine. It only does this when trying to set it up for wireless printing.

But I would recommend uninstalling the software and reinstalling it.

I have the same printer. When you installed the printer, did you set it up for wireless connection? If not, then you need to reinstall printer for wireless connection, you will need to have the usb cable connected to printer and laptop in order to transfer network settings to printer. Download the printer driver installation software and run the setup again, this time select wireless connection and follow the prompts. Pretty simple.

You made sure the printer is powered on?

YES, without any doubt!

IS COMPATIBLE

or more precisely, the software that came with the printer is not compatible.
THAT TOO IS ALSO COMPATIBLE (AND VERIFIED WITH THE BROTHER COMPANY).

Try by uninstalling the printer and reinstall the printer software disk to see if that cures the problem,
HAVE DONE THAT AND, TO WARD OFF TE NEXT QUESTION DOWN THE ROAD, YES, ALL FUNCTIONS OF THIS PRINTER WORK.

it may not have installed correctly in the first instance.
IT WAS, AND REINSTALLED.

On the Brother website it says that this model is no longer available, discontinued.
WHAT DOES THAT PROVE?...NEWER MODELS COME OUT ALL THE TIME.

**TO NOTE: WHEN I TYPE IN CAPS, THAT IS TO SEGREGATE PORTIONS OF THE REPLIES/QUESTIONS AND IS NOT YELLING**

AS INDICATED IN THIS THREAD - YES, I HAVE INSTALLED, UNINSTALLED, AND REINSTALLED THE SOFTWARE/DRIVERS WITH SAME RESULTS.

OK

YES, AS PER MANUFACTURERS VIDEO AS ALSO ATTACHED IN MY PREVIOUS POST..

If not, then you need to reinstall printer for wireless connection,
I DID
you will need to have the usb cable connected to printer and laptop in order to transfer network settings to printer.
I DID AS IN VIDEO--I HAVE/HAD USB CABLE ATTACHED TO MY LAPTOP AS THE INSTRUCTIONS ADVISE.

Download the printer driver installation software and run the setup again, this time
I HAVE DONE IT 3X'S ALREADY AND LATE LAST NIGHT I HAVE OBTAINED THE FACTORY INSTALLATION DISC FROM SOMEONE WITH THE IDENTICAL PRINTER AND WILL ATTEMPT THIS AGAIN TONIGHT.

Then your best solution will now, if the installation disc you've acquired doesn't solve anything, will be to contact Brother customer support by telephone and ask them what the problem may be and if there is a solution to it. The printer being now discontinued may mean that Brother no longer support it by means of driver and software updates, that's what that proves. Perhaps you should have bought a new up to date printer, after all, newer models are coming out all the time.

Just because its no longer available doesn't mean it shouldn't work. As I said, I've got the same printer, have had it for about 3 years now. The only issue I've had with it is that it would lose wireless connection to the router so I have it connected with ethernet cable to router and no issues since. It seems its an issue with the wireless feature on the printer being turned off somehow. Always had to go through a procedure to turn wireless back on. This may be his issue as well.

AS PER THE VIDEO ATTACHED, ALL WAS CONNECTED CORRECTLY, DRIVERS ARE CORRECT, INSTALLATION WAS DONE2-3 TIMES SO, THAT WOULD UNDOUBTED PROVE FRUITLESS.

The printer being now discontinued
MAKES NO DIFFERENCE THAT IT IS DISCONTINUED! SIMPLY MEANS THAT NEW PRODUCTS HAVE COME OUT THAT THE MANUFACTURER IS SELLING. WHAT IS SO TERRIBLY HARD TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT THAT?

may mean that Brother no longer support it by means of driver and software updates, that's what that proves.
AGAIN, PROVES NOTHING! DRIVERS AND SOFTWARE SUPPORTING MY OS AND OTHERS ARE WORKING FINE AND COMPATIBLE!

Perhaps you should have bought a new up to date printer,
PERHAPS YOU SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT ONE FOR ME! WHAT'S IT TO YOU WHAT I BOUGHT? THERE ARE MANY HERE THAT HAVE EQUIPMENT MORE THAN A FEW YEARS OLD THAT WORK FINE. I SAW THIS PRINTER WORKING BOTH HARDWIRED AND WIRELESS BEFORE I OBTAINED IT.

after all, newer models are coming out all the time.
AND AGAIN READ MY STATEMENTS ABOVE...PROSECUTION RESTS.

THANKS FOR THE REPLY...MAYBE YOU CAN MAKE HIM (johnb35) UNDERSTAND.
MY ROUTER IS 2 FEET AWAY FROM THE PRINTER AS WE "SPEAK". I WILL AGAIN UNINSTALL AND REINSTALL SOFTWARE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS LATER TONIGHT.

If you want, you can download teamviewer and i can connect remotely to you and see what the issue may be. Can chat on phone while doing so. Just let me know.
