So, it turns out the problem was the automatic update application that Microsoft used to notify people and "reserve" the upgrade. It simply wouldn't recognize the change in hardware. Hmmm, maybe it's "easier" to suggest buying a new computer? Anyway, I downloaded Win 10 directly from Microsoft, (which I should have done in the first place), installed it and all is well. I am truly grateful for all the advice and instruction here. I really appreciate it.
