The only two programs that I know of that are compatible with MS office and Excel are Libre office and Open Office.

LibreOffice or OpenOffice like above. They have pretty good compatibility with Word/Excel files although sometimes you'll see some formatting or other issues when using advanced functions.

What does this even mean?

It means people are lazy and this would be a reason someone would use to slag on Microsoft. Obviously Microsoft is a fly by night company if they have the audacity to expect users to click twice on something.....

Tbh Microsoft Office is a lot nicer to use than LibreOffice or OpenOffice.

People are gonna whinge at me saying this. I use Linux occasionally, I like FOSS software, but you do get what you pay for.

The cost of Microsoft Office is far less than a Surface 3 Pro anyway :p. I thought it all came with Office anyway?

This. Like x10000000000. Libre Office is ok, but it's really no contest. Google Docs are ok as well, if you don't mind google having all your stuff.

If you take out a £9000/year student loan and go to uni, then you will get office for free on Office365 most probably.

You can actually use online MS Office products for free from OneDrive. The online version isn't as comprehensive as the paid version but will be more than capable for most users. The drawback is that you can only use them when you have an internet connection.

I personally use Google docs quite a bit. I like it because I can have a spreadsheet, for instance, that I can access and edit from any device with a browser. That means I can view/edit it at home on my desktop but also view/edit it from my tablet or even my phone when I'm out and about. Changes are made in real-time so you could also give access to someone else and they could see changes you make to the document instantly.

A lot of people find the online tools useful, my issue is that my internet might not always be usable, so then, poof. No access to programs I need.

You could always be mad and download Oracle VirtualBox, and then install a copy of AndroidX86 in it, then download the free Android MS Office apps.

I'm almost never without an internet connection of some kind so the fact that I might not be able to access a document on Google Docs isn't an issue for me. I realize it's not the same for everyone. I have MS Office on my computers as well but Google Docs comes in handy at times when I want to be able to access a document from many devices.

It means he wants a direct download link and no crap or adds in the way.

Yeah, thats not what he meant. Sounds like he wants to be able to single click the icon to get it to open, which means he just needs to change settings. I hate the single click option to open the program.
