In search of light programs

Hey all, I ended up buying a Fujitsu U810 Micro Laptop. As you probably could guess this thing isn't blazing fast by any means. So I'm basically on a mission for lightweight programs to use with it. I found Panda anti virus, I think that's at light as they come. I am using Opera as the web browser, though I'm sure there's better programs out there, I've just always used Chrome so I have no idea what's out there.

As for Windows, I'm using a light weight version of Windows 7. I've read reports that Windows 10 is lighter than Windows 7, but I just really doubt that's true. Every computer I've put Windows 10 on feels more sluggish after the upgrade, whether it be fresh install or (shudder) upgrade. Also contemplating Windows XP, but for now 7 lite will work alright

So any suggestions for light weight applications would be cool, all suggestions welcome!

Windows 10 is definitely faster and less sluggish on all the machines I upgraded...
Have you looked into linux distros? Some are very light and easy to use. Mint for example.

Windows 10 has Windows Defender built in anyway. Saying that, my mum has an Intel Atom netbook running Windows 10 Home x32 with just 1GB memory. It runs avast! antivirus perfectly fine and they use Google Chrome too.

Windows 10 is more optimised to mobile devices, and has had more time for Microsoft to optimise stuff in it. If you fill the OS with crap or just do an upgrade, it will be slow. If you upgrade, before you do anything else once upgraded, go to Start, type in "Recovery", select "Reset this PC", and select Get Started. Do a complete fresh reset and choose to wipe all your documents from it.

I wouldn't suggest using Windows XP. You will have all sorts of issues nowerdays. For example, no SATA drivers built in so you have to give it some just to install, no UFEI support, Chrome and stuff are not supported, no security updates, no UAC so is less secure in general, and it is just old. You wouldn't pick a 15 year old stick of RAM to upgrade your computer with, so why an OS.

So any suggestions for light weight applications would be cool, all suggestions welcome!

ClamAV is also good for antivirus, uhm, Pale Moon seems to be a decent browser, but just disabling programs you don't need on start up in task manager, and then using CCleaner, Defraggler, etc to keep the system clean, and disabling unnecesarry services such as Bluetooth if you don't need it will really help.

Windows 10 is definitely faster and less sluggish on all the machines I upgraded...

^^ +1 for Windows 10.

For a slowish PC, I would not pick Mint Cinnamon, I would pick Mint MATE, and then you might as well use Ubuntu MATE instead of Mint. To be fair, you could look at Crunchbang++, or Lubuntu. Xubuntu may also work, or you could install something like Debian Netinstall and install all the bits you need yourself if you want to spend an afternoon setting it all up how you want.

Ubuntu MATE:

Crunchbang++ (still in development after the developer decided that the original Crunchbang was no longer useful a few years back, which was false, #! was amazing). However, you can see even from this screenshot, it is all running, but only using 0.18GB of RAM. That means you could have Chrome, etc all running quite happily. #! and Ubuntu (and Mint) are all relatives to Debian (since iirc they are all derived from Debian), so a hell of a lot of software is available ++ it is all free! The only issue with Linux is that depending on your hardware, drivers can be a bit of a pain to deal with, but it is a lot better than it used to be. Nvidia + Intel (Optimus) combinations can be a bit picky but especially with Ubuntu, there is a setting to install drivers for you, so it is not too difficult.

If you just browse the internet, what about AndroidX86? It is Android for Intel and AMD CPUs. It is free and stuff, and you can run basically any app that is available on the Play Store, so you get the copies of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc for Android all free!

Some kind of Linux distro would help you a lot. I used to use opera 24/7 but wouldn't trust it anymore given recent events. Definitely check out distros that utilize xfce or lxde.

The hardware on that is super low end, you aren't going to observe acceptable performance on really any windows.

I would try Ubuntu MATE first. MATE is meant to continue GNOME 2 in a round about sort of way.

Although it can be a bit ugly.

I guess tmux doesn't class as a "GUI" ;)

I don't know why I've had such bad luck with Windows 10. Startup time is great, but other things like start menu taking a while to open, ctl alt del just plain not working basically any time you'd actually need it (during a crash or whatever), and forced Windows update to name a couple.. I dunno, just a bad taste in my mouth I guess. I suppose updates have made it better stability and performance wise, I was an early adopter.

Anyways, the main thing I wanted this for was play older Windows games. Everything else is just icing on the cake. So far it's actually been pretty good for me. I've typed this on it, heh, and it plays older games like Morrowind and stuff great. I know about Ccleaner and my services and everything are tip top. RAM isn't an issue at all. I'm just trying to use the most efficient programs available(processor wise). Thanks for the input so far.

If you don't like Windows 10 give 8.1 a try. It's fast and very stable. Make sure you disable the Windows 10 upgrade though: http://www.infoworld.com/article/29...-10-crapware-off-your-windows-7-or-81-pc.html I used the steps in there to prevent my Surface Pro which has 8.1 on it from automatically upgrading to 10.

Did you upgrade from 7 or 8.1 to 10? It works much better with a clean install.

I've done all three actually, ha. Upgraded from 8.1 on my desktop, 7 on my laptop, then did a clean install on my laptop because it was running horribly. Also installed it on two work computers. Husband installed it on his desktop (He seems to like it).

I was contemplating Windows 8, I had good luck with that one. Is there any good offers they do on it or anything? The bonus of Windows 7 and XP is that I have legitimate keys for them.

I'm not sure where you are in the world but unfortunately 8.1 OEM still retails for $100 USD new on Newegg and Pro OEM still retails for $140 new so the price hasn't come down at all. :(

Immunet for anti-virus. I use that for my netbook. It runs XP and I've been fine. Imagine that. It also has 1GB of RAM. I use Pale Moon for a browser, but Moonchild's pick of a user agent in PM makes some things break on websites.

What programs do you need?

1 GB is going to be painful no matter how you slice it

Actually no. Running a slimmed down Windows 7 I'm at slightly above 410mb used at idle. The old games I'm playing run awesome, no complaints. Morrowind is pretty damn awesome on here.

Trust me, 1GB is plenty if you know what you're doing. People have managed to run Windows 7 with 128mb of ram.

What programs do you need?

Main thing is a light internet browser. I may even try something from oldversion.com. It's not like I'm using this for anything sketchy.

If you want stability, I prefer Linux Mint 17.3 (Ubuntu 14.04.4), but if you want the newest razzle dazzle I prefer Xubuntu 16.04. (16.04 doesn't have AMD drivers)
In my experience, both use around 90-150MB of RAM on idle, compared to 1GB+ of Windows 7+
Linux Mint 18 (16.04) will come to beta soon, very excited, Mint-Y looks amazing :)
