Hi guys I built my first PC about 4 years ago and its time to upgrade everything. The problem is that I'm not sure what I need to upgrade, obviously going to do a video card upgrade. I think I'm going o need a bit more ram as well. I'm lookin to play Witcher and Battlefield 1 at 1080 with 60 fps on high graphics settings. I want to try to stay under 400 for the graphics card. Here is what is in my PC. Also not to sure whether or not I need to upgrade my Cpu.

Cpu- Intel Core i5 2500k @ 3.3ghz (sandy bridge)

MotherBoard - Gigabyte Tech model number z68ma-d2h-b3

Ram- DDR 3 4gig x 2 (8 in total)

Video Card- AMD Radeon HD 6700 series

Power Source- Corsair 600w

Thanks Guys Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Would need to know exactly what video card you have. Could be the 6750, 6770, or 6790.

thank you very much, it doesn't have to be a amd, just looking for a graphics card that I can use for a long time to come.

Well if you go with the GTX 1070 then you'll be at $400 just for the video card and you would need a memory upgrade.

Your motherboard supports SLI so a 1070 is a very good idea. Your CPU is still really good. More RAM isn´t really that important right now. 8Gb is enough for most users. Unless you have really slow sticks.

Why is SLi a factor for getting a GTX 1070? With his system, it's really not ideal to run 2 1070's... now or in the future.

It's "alright".

16gb should really be the new standard for power users nowadays. 8gb is a minimum.

If you don't have an SSD, buy one. I also suggest going to 16GB of RAM. GPU wise, for 60fps @ 1080P you really don't need to stretch any further than an RX480 or GTX1060. You COULD get a 1070, but that 60Hz limit means that in most games under most circumstances, there would be some wasted potential in that 1070.
Now, if you play to upgrade to a 1440P or 4K display, then you should definitely look at a higher end card.

I also suggest that you buy a decent CPU cooler such as a CM Hyper 212 and overclock that CPU to 4.5Ghz. It makes a difference. 2500K is great overclocked but it's long in the tooth stock. Overclocking Sandybridge is dead simple. Don't be afraid. You can bang out a stable OC in one day.

I game on my specs, and its an amazing setup, very difficult to lag. Not quite as high end as what yall are talking about, but it works with no issues 99% of the time. Specs are in my sig

Ok thanks for the input guys, at the moment all I would be doing is gaming at 1080. I was looking to maybe buy a new cpu as well. I'm not afraid to shell out some money but I also am a casual gamer I just like having a nicer system that my father can use too because I'm traveling about 6 months out of the year.

I was thinking about the i7 6700k CPU and the GTX 1070. Would that mean I would need a new Power supply? Another thing, my current mother board Gigabyte Tech model number z68ma-d2h-b3. should I just buy another one or is that perfectly fine for the i7 and 1070?

Check your chipset to make sure it fits, but if it does it should. Thats an amazing setup though!

Your motherboard is socket 1155 which is 2 generations old at this point. The 6700k is socket 1151 and will not fit on your motherboard. In order to go socket 1151, you would need new motherboard, cpu and ram.

To use the 6700K you'll need a new motherboard. Z170 is recommended since it's the only one that allows overclocking.

In fact for that setup the only thing you could keep is the PSU.

Sorry I didn't see your post before. I was ignoring you and I'm starting to remember why.

"Should be the standard". That's an opinion and either way I said its not that important. I didn't say don't get more.

Why is SLi a factor for getting a GTX 1070? With his system, it's really not ideal to run 2 1070's... now or in the future.

Why would SLI not be a factor for getting the 1070? It's one of the most important ones. Otherwise just get the 1060.

It's "alright".

Genius observation!

It is important. 8gb is not "enough" for most people. It just meets the requirements as of right now. 16gb is still the way to go as more and more programs and applications chew through more and more ram.
Why would SLI not be a factor for getting the 1070?
Because if you don't get 2 now, you'll almost always never buy a 2nd one by the time you consider upgrading video card performance.
It's one of the most important ones.
No. It really isn't. Don't be stupid.
Otherwise just get the 1060.
That's not how it works. The GTX 1060 is not as fast as a 1070.
Genius observation!
How stupid are you?

Guys, seriously dont start an arguement, itll scare off new members who want a calm forum instead of a shitfest (As more and more are becoming).

ok besides the arguing this is great help :)

I think what I'm going to end up doing right now is OC my CPU, buy a better cooling fan, upgrade to 16gb RAM, and rock out a GTX 1070. that should start to get me somewhere. Then in the next couple months or so ill shell out some more cash for a new Mother board and i7 6700k CPU combo. I'm thinking that bench should be close to 1080 at 60 FPS on most games. I could also be wrong so correct me if I am?

The new motherboard takes DDR4 ram so you would need to buy new ram as well. Just make sure you get socket 1151 Z170 motherboard.
