Thanks for all the help! Last question (or two) ;)

Well I've decided to give this whole, build a PC thing a try. This is what I've picked out:

GPU: Zotac GTX1080 Amp Extreme (will skip the 1080ti if it comes out and wait for volta)
CPU: i7-7700k
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 80+ Gold
CASE: Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-ALPHA Mid-Tower
RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum Series 16GM DDR4 3200MHz
Cooler Master 212 EVO

Will be reusing my Samsung 840 EVO 1TB SSD as primary drive and a backup 7200k HDD. Running Windows 10 Home.

As far as the motherboard is concerned, I have been told the Asus Prime Z270-A was my best bet, but it seems to be sold out everywhere or shipping will take a week+ What is the difference between this board and the Z270-AR? That one is in stock but I can't find any info on the differences? Asus has like two dozen boards, very confusing..

Well then looks like I'll go with the Z270-AR

Last question.. What does one do after the computer is built? Run the bios, update it if necessary using a thumb drive, then anything else before installing Windows?

I personally disable all the power saving features in the BIOS so that I can get the most out of the CPU then install Windows. I wouldn't update the BIOS unless you have to, because there's always the risk of a power surge happening while you're updating it.

Yeah, a BIOS update is only something you really should do if it's going to fix something. There is risk involved with a flash. So I would add a UPS and a good surge protector. Basically, if it ain't broken don't fix it approach.

You should check manufacturers website and look at the most current BIOS release and see what the changes are.....if they apply to something you may need the board to do then update but if the new release doesn't do anything for you then why do the update.

Well, it took me about 4 hours taking my sweet time.. but my first ever PC build is done and working like a charm! Using a program called speccy, I see my CPU is running mid 30's C while downloading updates, listening to music, surfing the web, etc.. and GPU is around 30 even..

Need to update drivers and download my games back before I can see what shes capable of! Thanks again for all the help.

BTW would you guys/gals trust the ASUS "canned" overclock profiles included in the z270 MB?

What do you mean, update drivers? You didn't use the drivers that came on the disc in the box did you?

Also core temp and hwmonitor are better than speccy

Had to download drivers for my printer, oculus rift setup, etc. Along with steam games it took quite a while to download everything on my relatively slow 25mbs Internet

Ur supposed to download everything don't use any discs

That's exactly what I did. I do have one problem tho...

I'm using my old Logitech Z-5500 speaker set, I plugged the three colored wires into the computer correctly (I use them instead of a optical cable bc I am using a Buttkicker and it requires that) After this, I run the Realtek Windows 10 speaker set up... set it to 5.1 surround and a speaker test within windows shows them all working perfectly. HOWEVER, in iTunes or any game, only the left speaker is working.. sometimes both left speakers sometimes just the one.. WTF is wrong?? I'm lost with this.
