Upgrading my RAM need help.

So right now I have 1x8 GB hyper x RAM which runs at 1333 Mhz. I wan't to add another 8 GB to my system but a lot of people have been telling me different things. Some people said that I need to sell the current one I have and buy 2 from the store, some people said that I can buy and mix up RAM'S that have different speeds and different brands. So I really don't know what to do.

If you guys can give me some tips I would really appreciate it.

My mobo has 4 slots for RAM and I don't know where to put the extra ram that I will buy in the near future. Again a lot of people have been telling me lots of different things so I'm really confused right now.

You should buy another stick of the same speed and timings as your existing, if you can't get it then you need to sell what you have and buy a dual channel ram package. This is why we don't recommend only getting 1 stick of ram and expecting to upgrade later.

Hey thanks for responding ! If I download cpu-z and check the memory tab it says that DRAM frequency is at 933 Mhz but if I type in cmd the following command wmic memorychip get speed it says that the ram is running at 1333 speed. Also I really don't know how to check RAM timing is there a special software I need to use ?

What motherboard do you have? If you have 1333mhz ram, dram frequency should say 667 or close to it. Unless you have it overclocked?

I have MSI Z97 Gaming 5. Well when I check in the DRAM frequency in a software like Speccy or CPU-Z it says that the DRAM frequency is 933 Mhz but when I type in the command that I mentioned before it says that It is running with 1333 Mhz. I do not have anything overclocked.

I attached some pictures that might help

Are you sure the ram sticks say 1333mhz? According to both of those they should be DDR3 1866mhz. Click on the spd tab and tell me what it says next to part number.

Then you are running 1866mhz, wouldn't trust what command prompt says. Cpu z says my rams are in slots 1 and 2 when they are in slots 2 and 4. I think it has some to do with dual channel.

You can manually set it in BIOS just to be sure.

But yeah that is an 1866 MHz stick. If you buy another one of the same model you shouldn't have any issues.

That is interesting. Thank you so so much. So when upgrading I should be looking for hyperx fury that have the same frequency as this one that I currently have which is 1866 Mhz is that correct or do I need to look for anything else ?

The only reason I am upgrading is because I have stuttering/jittery/choppy gameplay in all of my games. You have probably saw some of my posts that I did in the past and to this day I haven't found the solution so I will try upgrading the RAM and see if that fixes it.

Alright thanks mate ! So the model and the frequency/speed should be the same right ?

Yes, you should buy the exact same as the original if its still available. I don't think ram is your issue. What video card do you have?

Never mind. I just looked at your other threads and it seems you have the 970. Shouldn't be having any issues with games. Maybe an issue with the video card, or did I already mention that in the other thread? lol

I've tried so many things at this point I'm going to make a couple more threads and then just give up since this is so stressful. I mean I've bought this computer 2 years ago and since then I haven't played a game without stuttering. As you probably know I can't even play games like runescape 3 or minecraft which just pisses me off the most.

Yeah you've helped me quite a lot and we ruled out a lot of things but I guess my situation is just hopeless.
