Is there any way to play Blu-Ray Disc on my laptop's DVD player?
My laptop is a few year old and the player is a plain DVD R&W only.

It's the same reason a standard CD-ROM can't play DVDs , you need the correct hardware on the drive to be able to read Blu ray

Thank you all for the input.
Let me clarify something . . .

1. If I purchase a Blu-Ray player for my my laptop, would I be able to plug in to any laptop's old DVD slot and play the disc? One of my computer is 5 year old.
2. Would the Blu-Ray player R/W DVD?
3. Do I need any special software?

On my newer laptop (2+ yrs), I have replace the DVD with a (DVD caddy+HDD). I bought a USB cable to connect the internal DVD that was removed, to the laptop in case I need to use the DVD to read or write. Would that cable work with the Blu-Ray player?

I found this Blu-Ray player one eBay. Do you think it will work with the USB cable to hook it up as an external drive?

Not every drive will fit in every laptop. Design and thickness comes into play besides the front bezel as well.

Not sure what you mean by this.

You'll need bluray software to play them.

I think he means, will it physically fit into his machine. (Yes, you just need to make sure its compatible as far as size goes) and you'll need to reuse the outter tray piece that is on outside of drive so it fits the contour of your laptop as the previous drive would have.

You need blu-ray playback software. There are also hacks to make other players play blurays but the quality is not always great.

Possibly but probably not. Get an external drive.
2. Would the Blu-Ray player R/W DVD?
Bluray is backwards compatible with DVD R/RW and CD R/RW as well as standard DVD/CD
3. Do I need any special software?
Yes
