Amazon Fire tablet?

I recently picked up an Amazon Fire tablet very cheaply. The people I got it from did not know if it even worked as they did not have a charger for it. I plugged it in with one of my cables and it powers on just fine. The problem with it is that the tablet is password protected and the previous owner has no idea what the password could be as it belonged to a now deceased relative of theirs.

Is there any way to reset it and create a new password so that the tablet can be used? Is it just trash since we will never know what the original password was?

I have no idea what generation it is. I can't pull anything up since it is asking for a PIN. It looks like it is very new but I don't know anything about these tablets. I can't even connect to my wi-fi as it wants the PIN. Trying to get into the settings also requires a PIN I will check out the link that you sent. Thank you very much for your help
