Best recommended Ext. HD

I'm still very much a novice on these boards and in the PC world.

My biggest fear is 1 day loosing all our family photos and videos.
My main rig has a 4tb HGST int. HDD <--- there are only photos and videos on this. No O.S or software.

I have a 5 year old toshiba ext. HD with 500gb. Works smooth and like new.
I have almost 3 year old toshiba ext HD with 2tb. Runs very very slow. And sometimes not at all.

Can someone recommend me a good quality ext. HD.
I'm paranoid 1 drive will die so I have no problem buying another as a back up.

Ive done many google searches and lots of mixed opinions and reviews. I hear a lot of negative about seagate, then WD.
But what brand is the best to go with?

Not interested in cloud storage.
Dont want family photos and videos out there.

Thanks everyone.

Your best bet is probably something with a twin drive NAS in RAID 1 format for data redundancy. Typical NAS devices will allow for cloud storage capabilities, but it's not on by default and must be configured for it to work. So you won't have to be concerned about that.

Something like these and then just buy regular 3.5" harddrives to put in them.

The main advantages of NAS in your case would be the centralized location of where you store your important data while having data redundancy through RAID 1 (the second harddrive mirrors the first one, so if one of them fails you would still have all your data. Then all you have to do is replace the dead harddrive with a new one and the data that was mirrored in the second drive will copy over to the new drive to bring back your data redundancy).

If these are out of your price range and is simply looking for a standard external harddrive, I would recommend external harddrives from WD. The bigger 3.5" external harddrives they have are typically cheaper than the smaller 2.5" "passport" models.
