Dell Win 7 Desktop - No Net access after recovery, no restore points

Greetings all,

My out of state disabled vet brother has a DELL desktop computer running WIN 7 32 bt, and OFFICE 2010....Plenty of HD space and ram.....He had a computer glitch (software not hardware) of sorts (cannot recall exactly what it was darn it!) and to accelerate this thread/description, he checked everything in MSCONFIG turning all ON. Well, that stopped his computer from booting.

Ok, I shipped him some utility discs and he used "essentials window recovery" (or some crapola like that) and was able to utilize the automated repair selection of it which, DID RESTORE his computer to boot up and access his files. He no longer has his WIN 7 disc but, I did ship him a Win 7 copy should we need it.

When he went to do a restore point, he got an error message - in effect said that his restore was "turned off" and/or could not find or access them. I did some research and somehow got into the "Volume Shadow Copy" and was able to turn it back on. However, there is only one (1) restore point and it was for that day!

**I am not sure if the utility disc had turned off his restore points when he used the disc because they were ON before all this crapola happened or if teh disc deleted them. He did a virus scan a few days prior to this and also used anti-malware bytes with no anomalies found.

***The current problem is that he has no internet access. His cables were tested, he used a different computer on the cat 5 connected to his dell desktop and all was well. I had stored the net driver in that ex hd 2 years ago and had him reinstall it but, it appears that it still isn't working and that it shows a problem in "device mgr". He is hesitant on restoring his computer back to a few months ago as he would lose some important info. He can back up his "broken configuration computer" as it is right now but, that doesn't really solve the problem.

Am I missing something Re: getting back the restore points of the past?....Is there something I am missing regarding the re-installation of the NET DRIVER?

What exact model of dell does he have? We can give him the download link for it and he'll be back in business. A lot of malware will disable system restore such as ransomeware's and others.

Thanks for the reply....Download for what?....His restore function is NOW ON but, as I stated, is only showing one restore point indicating the time his computer was able to boot normally after using the utility discs sent to him....His net is the most important right now and like i said, i reinstalled the driver....I will call him momentarily to see if he is there and get model number of comp. EDIT: IS OPTIPLEX 210L

This is the driver for that machine.

https://downloads.dell.com/network/R105788.EXE

He will need to download it from a different machine and put it on a usb flash drive and install that way.

FYI, once system restore is turned off, any restore points get deleted. Thats why there was only 1 available when turning it back on which was for same day and nothing before.

He should try to do a TCP/IP stack repair. http://www.velocitymicro.com/SupportArticles/Article_959.php

Check the host file and do an ipconfig /flushdns for the hell of it too. Idea being start fresh. Once he has Internet, have him download the stand alone Team Viewer client and use Team Viewer to access his computer and run auto runs and Freefixer and make sure everything is in order. I would also then install Tweaking.com's Windows Repair.

To make life easier in the future use Rollback Rx. It will create real back up images on the computer. Then when you need to restore your computer to an earlier time when the computer boots you press the Home keyboard key and use the arrow keys and Alt key to navigate the menu and select a restore point. It's like an upgraded version of Windows restore. But it's far, far better to buy an external HDD with adequate capacity and use AOMEI Backuper and do a clone every now and then. That way when SHTF again you have your clone and you just reclone your image back to the computer and it will be like nothing ever happened.

That is my method and I store my external HDDs in a fireproof/waterproof safe.

Note that users that use Truecrypt or Veracrypt can't use Rollback Rx. It will mess up the boot loader.

OK, I WILL EXAMINE THIS AFTER I HIT MY COFFEE POT THIS MORNING.

Check the host file and do an ipconfig /flushdns for the hell of it too.
WILL DO.

Idea being start fresh. Once he has Internet,
THAT IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL RIGHT NOW

have him download the stand alone Team Viewer client and use Team Viewer to access his computer
I HAVE IT IN HIS COMPUTER ALREADY HOWEVER, NO NET AS OF YET.

and run auto runs and Freefixer and make sure everything is in order. I would also then install Tweaking.com's Windows Repair.
ARE THESE TWO DOWNLOADABLE? (AUTO RUNS A PROGRAM?).

To make life easier in the future use Rollback Rx.

OK, HOWEVER, IF THE COMPUTER TAKES A DUMP (AND POSSIBLY NOT BOOTING) AND THOSE IMAGES ARE ON THE COMPUTER, THEY THEN WOULD BE INACCESSIBLE.

It's like an upgraded version of Windows restore. But it's far, far better to buy an external HDD with adequate capacity
HE HAS ONE I BOUGHT FOR HIM JUST FOR THIS TYPE OF EMERGENCY. I WOLD HAVE BEEN GREAT IF HE DIS A BACK UP EACH WEEK DELETING THE PREVIOUS BACK UP.

and use AOMEI Backuper and do a clone every now and then. That way when SHTF again you have your clone and you just reclone your image back to the computer and it will be like nothing ever happened.

SEE ABOVE - HE HAS AN EXT HD.

Thanks for the reply!....Stack repair was a "no-go".....Going to take another stab at his around noon (E.S.T.)....

1. I advised him to save his current computer image on his external hard drive (ehd) so that nothing would be lost.

2. I told him to save his current pst file (office 2010) to his ehd. (*SEE NOTES BELOW).

3. Then, I told him (will do today) to copy his last working image back onto into his dell. If he has a net connection, that would eliminate the integrated net card as problem.

4. Then, eliminate ALL his e-mails on his back up image already on his computer as in #3.

5. Then, import the saved pst file back onto his computer.

**NOTES**
Due to similar problems like this in the past, he has 3 e-mail address profiles. EX.;
[email protected](1), [email protected](2)
, [email protected](3) - Would saving the pst file as above save these also or will there be 3 pst files?...Thanks for any help!

UPDATES;
After many many hours on this, not any farther ahead....What i did do is send him a disc with office 2010 on it to attempt a repair his office installation....What we did is attempt a repair directly from the disc itself but, the results are the same...At this point, i opted to attempt to uninstall office 2010 and to reinstall same...Here is where it gets strange.

After utilizing the un-install feature of the installation disc, it said to reboot the computer...fine...done....Then, we attempted to re-install office 2010 (note and a reminder, the only thing not fully functional is the e-mail client OUTLOOK). After the re-installation was complete, damn, what was there?...ALL of his mail, contacts, etc. was back where it was when we started!!...(also to note, he does have internet access with his Firefox browser). Further, I noticed that his shortcuts placed onto his desktop were still there but, were "color-less" and non-functional. Should they also have been un-installed?

What happened to the full un-install that was supposed to be done? I uninstalled the complete office program not just the Outlook suite. I had this problem in 2015 as I re-read my posts on that but, no new info.

I checked and rechecked the port settings, passwords, everything from Verizon as to how to set up Outlook for his mail and they were correct (ports, passwords, spelling, socket layers, etc.). https://www.verizon.com/support/consumer/email/outlook-2010 .

When we tested his e-mail from Outlook, it gives a "test" feature that tests server access (isp) and mail, then, sends mail back to his mail address confirming all is well and mail received. When we do that, his cell phone will receive that mail but, his Dell desktop will not receive anything. WHAT ARE WE/I DOING INCORRECTLY HERE?

My next attempt should be w/in the next 3 days and I plan on using REVO uninstaller for the next uninstall and try and reload Office 2010. Really need help on this.

Even though you uninstalled Office, his Outlook profile will remain on the computer unless you delete it.

It's best to leave it and just setup a new mail profile. You can do so by going into Control Panel and opening the Mail options.

Also it seems the SMTP settings are correct, but your POP/IMAP ports are incorrect, which is why you're receiving email on his phone but not on his computer.

IS NOT HIS PROFILE PART OF THE OFFICE PROGRAM AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN DELETED WHEN I UNINSTALLED OFFICE?

HE DID THAT ONCE BEFORE AND HE HAS 2 ON THERE ALREADY. REALLY DO NOT WANT TO DO THIS.

BUT, I FOLLOWED THE VERIZON DIRECTIVES FOR SETTING UP MAIL ON OUTLOOK. WHAT THEN, IF I MAY ASK, SHOULD THEY BE SINCE EVERY PLACE I HAVE LOOKED ARE ALL INDICATING WHAT IS ALREADY IN PLACE.

Outlook profiles are stored under the users AppData, so it is not removed unless you manually delete the profile, or the user on the computer.

Then delete the old profiles if you don't want/need them.

I don't know. What settings did you follow and what do the server settings look like in Outlook?

And for god sakes can't you learn how to just use quotes in your posts already?

I respond:
"You tell me that the ports are incorrect but, you indicate that you don't know?"

I only followed what Verizon has indicated.

Of course I don't know. I don't use Verizon anything and I don't have the documentation you're going off. For all I know Verizon's documentation is wrong.

My advice would be to call up Verizon and have them help the guy set up his email. He probably would have had it going by now if he would have called them before. Some of the online websites list the wrong ports/mail servers. They are updated frequently.

Verizon's configuration from THEIR website for Outlook (2010);

  1. Select the Office botton (or File)
  2. Click "Account Settings"
  3. Select the incoming.verizon.net email account and click on ‘Change"
  4. Click on "More Settings"
  5. Select the "Advanced" Tab and check the following settings
    • Type pop.verizon.net in the Incoming (POP) field.
    • The Incoming Server (POP3) should be set to 995.
    • For Incoming mail (POP3), check the box that says "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)".
    • Type smtp.verizon.net in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field.
    • The Outgoing Server (SMTP) should be set to 465.
    • Use the following type of encrypted connection: SSL (select from dropdown)
  6. Click "OK"
