What type of protection do you have on your computer?

There are two things you can do to prevent them:

1) good protection
2) good browsing habits

As far as protection goes, I use Avast free and Malwarebyte antimalware free. No need to have more than that. The most important part is your browsing habit. If you tend to go on shady websites, install toolbars when asked to, you'll get viruses.

I'm moving this post to the Secuirty section.

Follow the instructions on this post and post the logs to see if you're still infected. A badly cleaned computer will get infected again.

I get viruses often and I would like to know how do I stop future viruses.
I've had more computers then I can recall for 25+ years and only had a virus one single time..

Good anti-virus, good malware removal tool, and smart online habit as mentioned above are key...

uBlock and Common Sense are the best AntiVirus.

Following up with Avast Free or even Windows Defender (don't kill me guys, works fine for me). Malwarebytes every once in a while as needed.

That's the good and bad thing about so many products available..depending where you are - like for instance, I've never heard of either of the 2 you mentioned that, in your opinion, are best. If you were some random on here, I wouldn't give it a second thought, but since I know you here and value your opinion and views I'd give both a trial run on your recommendation, as I do regularly with things people on here mention.

I used to love Avast and swear up and down it was the best, enough for most people...etc.., but I completely uninstalled it a while back cause I got pissed off that no matter what I did, I could not disable/pause it using their own function to do so...reinstalled..etc.. would never disable.. so I gave up on it for that single reason.

uBlock is an Ad blocking extension for Chrome and Common Sense is common sense not to click on stupid crap that gets you infected. :D

My point being is that the user has more to do with getting ads than any level of AntiVirus can provide. A lot of my job is malware removal here at my local shop and nearly every single computer has McAfee, Norton, Avira, or Avast on it. It's down to the user and blocking all ads does nothing but help, particularly on those pesky websites riddled with "Download HERE!" banner ads that mislead you.

Might give Avast another whirl. They've chilled out a lot with notifications and have refreshed their entire UI. Feels much more lightweight and modern than Avast of yesteryear.

I just removed Avast recently..like in the last 30 days recent.. I need to disable AV when I use mod software with GTAV and when I have to uninstall to make that happen, it defeats the purpose and convenience of having a toggle in quick launch or in app.

Truthfully, I'm not even rocking any AV right now..

Yeah you are. Defender. That's all I use and Windows 10 won't let you keep it off if you don't have another AV in place.

You can disable Avast's shields, have you tried it?

Ohh I know this..in theory its crystal clear.. BUT.. it does not work on my PC... its infuriating.. I've downloaded and re-downloaded multiple times...it will never allow me to select any of those 4 options.. :(

I had to remove it cause if I leave AV on when I'm modding I will crash out nearly every time within minutes..

Punk is right. I've never ran anti-virus and have built and bought several machines. I only use internet for games (Steam and Origin), Pandora, Youtube, email and some light browsing (StumbleUpon if I'm bored). You should never just randomly end up on shady sites. You're either clicking adverts or typing URLs you don't need to be. I recently began using the Avast Free and Malwarebytes and have not had issues thus far. Good luck, hope your problem gets sorted out. Stay on trusted sites!
