1440p monitor

I currently have a:

intel i5 3570 3.4ghz
Evga gtx 1060 6gb
16gb ram
1080p 60hz monitor
Gpu typically runs at 60-66c with no extra oc. Bf1 can run ultra 60fps. Witcher 3 on high with 60fps.

I'm looking into getting a 1440p or possible even a 4k monitor, but I've been doing some research on resolution and you guys are way smarter then me. From what I've seen 4k is only going to be possible on low settings and on older games were 1440p is far more likely.

I have a few questions.

How likely will I get 60 fps on the higher settings in 1440p? I don't know how much over 60 fps I'm getting in my games because I assume if I'm barely getting 60 it doesn't bold well. Is it safe to say if I'm getting let's say 80 fps in bf 1 I would get x amount less in 1440p?

Do mostly games support 1440p resolution?

I read that if you switch to 1080p resolution on a 1440p monitor the imagine may not be as well if compared to a standard 1080p montior. Is that true ?

Do I need any special cables or higher quality ones compared to the basic hdmi cables i currently use?

Thanks for any information you provide and if you have anything extra you want to add or advise me on I'd greatly appricate it.

You will be able to get 60 fps at 1440p with many games, especially 1st person shooter games with a GTX 1060. However, you may have to adjust the graphics settings down slightly compared to some games to maintain 60 fps.

Yes, many games support 1440p and even 4k resolutions. GTA SA for example even supports 4k resolutions, so resolution in games shouldn't be too much of an issue as to which games support which resolutions, as majority of the games now support 4K, let alone 1440p.

I've got a 4k monitor myself, and switching from 4k to 1080p looks the same as having a standard 1080p monitor next to it. Therefore having a 1440p monitor and turning the resolution down to 1080p shouldn't affect the sharpness compared to a native 1080p monitor.

This is incorrect. Because your not running at the native resolution the image has to be scaled which naturally looks worse than having each pixel match but between it being rendered and being display. I have a 1440p and two 1080p's. Doing a side by side reveals this to be true as a 1080p game looks better on the 1080p monitors than the 1440p monitors.

This is not to say that it looks bad by any means, but there is a slight quality loss.

I've tried it myself, and I must admit yes, there is a slight bit of quality loss, however it isn't really noticeable unless you put your head right towards the monitor in my personal experience.

Yeah the difference is small and the vast majority of games support 1440p, making this a non issue. Just want to point out there is a technical reason behind it being "worse".

1080p>1440p is a huge quality jump in itself, so definitely worthwhile.
