Probably although I'm no expert on Apple stuff.

Brit prices incidentally as I am in UK. At least the USB connection is different between the two although that can be overcome with an adapter. It would be easier to just plug your Ipad/Iphone into your computer and store your files that way onto your computer external drive. Having said that I know that Apple stuff does all it possibly can to make that sort thing as difficult as it can possibly be which is why I will never use any Apple device and why I am no expert on Apple devices.

Generally speaking, you can't run a full HDD off an iPad or iPhone. A small flash drive, such as _Pete_ suggested in his first link, but not a full HDD.

Why not network this. Either by buying a NAS hard drive and all devices connect to it via the network, or by connecting the drive to the computer and sharing it over the network to the phone/tablet.

I don't know about the iPhone or iPads but I connect an external 1TB Seagate hard drive to my Samsung S7. I was surprised the S7 had enough power on its USB to power it. Still a flash drive would be better.

Yeah, that's definitely not recommended and you'll probably only get about 6 minutes of battery life that way. Not good for your phone, as it really wasn't meant to do that.
