Case for Laptop HDD

Hi, this is my first post and I admit I am very much a novice with IT although I do use computers most of my waking hours!

I have the HDD's from two of my old laptops which I want to extract the data from. The laptops are not accessible so i thought the easiest way to access the data was to buy a case with a USB attachment. This will also allow me (i hope) to use the HDD's as storage devices in the future.

If the above is feasible can anyone advise which case I would need and what to look for on my HDD's to ensure I purchase the correct case please?

I don't where you are but you can get what you want on Ebay. You need a 2.5 inch external drive caddy with a USB lead, they usually come with that. The only thing is that older hard drives were IDE and newer ones are SATA. That means they have different connections. Can you post a picture of the connections on the back of the drives unless, of course, you know whether the drives are IDE or SATA.

Hi Pete, thank you for the quick reply, really appreciate it. I've put a photo of the connections below.

The Op could use one of those. I have one but I'm not a huge fan. They leave the hard disk vulnerable to shock, yeah I know a caddy isn't much protection but it is a bit. It also leaves the hard disk vulnerable to the hard disk control board being shorted because you have placed it down on something made of metal and yes I have done that. But bottom line is yes you can use one of those and that has both IDE and SATA connections.
