New monitor, old computer?

I have an older computer that I haven't updated in a long time. I recently bought a monitor that connects to the computer via DisplayPort or an HDMI. Plugged the DisplayPort cable into the computer and the monitor says no input connected. My guess is the video card is outdated- is that right, and how do I fix?

If the video card has a displayport output, it should support displayport.

Sometimes you need to change the settings within the monitor's menus in order to specify which input to use. Many monitors auto sense the input. Without knowing the make/model of your monitor we can't tell you if yours does.

DisplayPort plugs sometimes don't sit fully. Pull out the cable and reseat it firmly. They've got little clips on them so it's gotta be pushed all the way in.
