Is rooting bad for my Android phone?

generally, rooting an Android will leave your phone highly vulnerable and provides a fairly wide open attack surface. unless you know what you're doing and practice reasonable security hygiene, I'd leave it alone.

It's generally pretty safe, just a security risk. It's not really necessary for most things anymore except installing custom ROMs.

As in you're not going to brick it or catch it on fire. Whether the security risk is worth it is up to the user, as you said depends a lot on the person and why they need it rooted to determine if it's worth it.

fair enough
Yeah usually when I see people ask this kind of question they're worried about bricking it, bootlooping, and stuff like that. Rooting these days is frequently just an app you install or boot into recovery mode. Flashing custom ROMs is where it gets risky.

You don't even have root your phone to even flash custom Roms now if that's what you want. Just needs to unlock the bootloader.
