WIndows 10 Asking for password on fresh install

As the title says, reformatted a lenovo laptop with fresh Win 10 pro and all I did was activate windows, install chrome, office 2016 suite, did any updates that were ready to do, and once done, turned it off.

Next morning, turn it on - asking for password! Tried random things, but obviously none would work - was more going through the motions while in disbelief.

Never had this happen, ever - and while there are many threads and such on google - they all seem to be after o/s update or people that had been using the affected machine for a period of time.

Anyhow, obvious solution is to just reformat and call it a day - but why did this happen randomly and how can I prevent this occurring again as this laptop is sold to a friend.

Thanks

I've came across this myself a few times. It's due to the windows update. No password was required to sign in before the update but was required after update. I have a feeling its just a corrupt user profile from the update. Access advanced features and just choose to do a system restore before the update and do it again. Or do reset. There is no way to stop this from happening again, unfortunately we have to rely on MS for proper updates.

Okay, so I understand this.

But then why isn't it happening to any other laptops/pc I've been working on.. or is it literally random?

also, do you know what update is the offending one?

It is.

There is no specific update. I've seen this happen for the last couple years. If I could keep track of what updates people are downloading before they call me saying they can't log into windows then it wouldn't be hard to track down what group of updates would cause this. Another problem would be if its one of the big feature updates like the October or April creators update, pretty big changes in those.
