The first question is, the motherboard (this forum) is where people are thinking of building their own machine? Otherwise why do you want to talk about motherboard?

Am I right?

The first thing you should do is asses how you intend to use the computer. If you're anything like many of us you will assume you're going to use it for virtually everything but reheating old stew. If you're going to be doing something such as overclocking, gaming, or intense video reencoding or transcoding then it's a good idea to look for a board with an 8 phase power design so that it can handle the heat. Now Gigabyte used to use heavy duty caps with a four phase arrays on some their boards that are capable of handling a fair amount of heat. As you probably know a board can cost between $90 and $300 so asses your needs and then think about your budget. I just built a new system using using an Asrock X370 X gaming board although I do very little gaming, but I do engage in a lot of video creation and reencoding. This is my first Asrock board but it has an 8 phase power design, and if it's good for extended gaming, then it's good for overclocking and video manipulation. If my memory serves it sells for about $150. Good luck! One last thought, I decided to go with a Ryzen 7 1700 8 core because for my use a reasonable power multi-core processor gave me the best bang for the buck.

There are other reasons, such as a motherboard issue, or to talk about a board that looks super fancy, or maybe a manufacturer had a bad run and is highly prone to issues and you post here as a warning. There are plenty of reasons to talk about motherboards.

^ I agree, there's a hundred thousand reasons to talk about a motherboard as it is the single most important component in any and every computer, and (anymore) any electronic, on planet earth :)

Let's I want to build a machine for video editing. I need a relatively powerful CPU and GPU and a good chunk of DRAM. A SSD and a large size HHD. Plenty of USB ports.
I also would like to keep the cost as low as possible.

Where should I start? Motherboard?

For video editing, the motherboard isn't that important. Even a $50-$75 motherboard would work. The more higher priced motherboards have more bells and whistles so to speak. If you want M2/NVME SSD then you'll need one that supports it. Video editing is mainly on cpu, ram and gpu.

If you want a "Super Duper computer" it's not going to be cheap. Maybe he is asking us to do a price list for him. Give him prices on AMD or Intel. Is this just going to be used for video/photo editing, browsing internet and such? Or all you going to do some hardcore gaming on it?

Yes, this is mainly for editing videos with Adobe Premiere Pro CC and Media Encoder. A suggested list of components and sample pricing would be great.

It's been a while since I used Adobe premiere, but I found that many things could not be hardware accelerated by a gpu, leaving my cpu to do most of the work, most of the time. I wasn't even able use the hardware acceleration on my gpu to help with 4k video playback, so it was choppy on the weak cpu I was using at the time. If i were to use this program again, then I would prioritise the cpu first, but still get the best gpu possible.
Maybe there have been a few changes since I last used this program and hardware acceleration is being used more?

Depends on what you want to build, IMO for video editing AMD is better choice than Intel.

CPU: AMD R7 2700X
Graphics Card: GTX 1060 6GB
Motherboard: MSI X470 Gaming Plus
RAM: 32GB DDR4
Storage 1: 500GB Samsung 970 EVO M.2 SSD
Storage 2: 5TB Toshiba HDD (or 6TB / 8TB)
Power Supply: EVGA G3 750W

Just want to mention that Adobe Premiere performs better on Intel processors primarily due to the relatively new feature of Quick Sync. Use of Quick Sync requires the integrated gpu on the processor, so it's only reserved for the LGA115x stuff since the HEDT platform doesn't normally come with iGPU's on the CPU die.

So if you primarily use Adobe Premiere, the i9 9900k is probably your best bet. It may sound expensive, but with Quick Sync enabled, you're going to be punching well above your class for Adobe Premiere.

Anything else, the Ryzen platform maybe a better solution and easier on the wallet.

That would have been my second suggestion, you can build an i9 build for like $600ish more.

However i will say that when it comes to video editing AMD Ryzen would do quite well.

Ofc the rest of the parts are up to you really. But personally that would be my i9 build. Kind of a starting point anyway for 4k video editing.
