Seagate 2TB HDD 2.5": Is it worth saving $20?

Seagate ST2000LM007 2TB 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive for $65.09

Seagate 2TB BarraCuda 5400 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop Internal Hard Drive ST2000LM015 for $84.99

The latter is supposed to be "newer". Both 6GB/s interface and 5400 rpm.

Is one faster than the other?

For a data drive (have SSD for system and programs), is it worth paying $20 more?

There are no hard differences between the 2. They have different firmware, which means there are minor differences like maybe a controller board revision but it's generally undocumented to the consumer. The older one is no longer produced, but they should be more or less the same.

I think the end number just indicates thickness.

7mm vs 15mm. I'd get the thinner one for more universal compatibility.

I'd spend an extra $20 and get anything not Seagate. The ST2000LM000 drive is the same family series as the ST3000DM001 drives that failed in such high numbers they're in a class action lawsuit now. The 2Tb versions just had 2 less read/write heads, so they failed 1/3 less often (only 4 heads to potentially fail instead of 6).

That other one is the new "Rosewood" family of Seagate drives and they're already showing up in droves to data recovery labs. These drives are so cheaply manufactured that they don't even have a full top cover. If you remove the label, it exposes the platters to open air. Total garbage quality.

Get yourself a good HGST or Toshiba instead.

The Toshiba is 9.5mm instead of 7mm. Would that fit in my laptop's DVD Caddy (HP or Toshiba)?

Depends on your laptop, but if it was a 7mm before, then probably not. It might be best to stick with a 1Tb for now.

Or, just be sure you've got a good backup strategy in place and be prepared to have it go bad on you.

Actually, I misread the first model number before, it's not in the same family with the ST3000DM001 that's in a class action suit, they are both the new Rosewood family that's failing like crazy now (probably will be their next class action lawsuit).
